for the people saying no, we aren't talking about a story. What we are talking about is a slight briefing as to how team A ended up where they are and why team B is where they are.

example:

The Chinese army dispatched a unit to attack *city name* hoping to cut short the American invasion. The US military quickly dispatched one of it's local outfits to hold down the area.

and done.

see no restriction on role play what so ever for all we know the chinese sent an army of midgets and the US enlisted the help of hobbits
Information in the hands of a critical thinker is invaluable, information alone is simply dangerous.

Even still... No.

I don't care if it's a bit of background. Personally, it makes a map much more replayable if it's a complete blank slate, with no background info or story at all.

I can imagine that a map like "Iron Ridge" is a totally different battle, that has a similar setting to a previous game....

Very hard to explain, but I just want people to leave it the way it is.

Briefings would suck in my opinion.

I'm still sticking my hand up to write them. I have a little experience at writing, and write a lot of briefs and orders. All I need to know is what format and style they're wanted in. I'm going away for a month on Sunday though.

Edit: Conceptually, what do people think or replacing the little symbols at the bottom of the map with NATO standard map symbols for the ORBATs and schemes of maneuvre on the map?

Could do something semi short of what they do in Americas army, just give a description of where it is as well as friendly/hostile weaponry/size, etc.

The object is realism and briefing during map loading is efficient and should give the entire team a general idea of terrain tasks etc.

If you guys need to write briefings. Please, please.

I'll be EXTREMELY happy to write some of them. I love making up backstories and briefings in my head before playing PR maps.

If there are any devs, please, I would love to write briefings.

Okay. :)

Fallujah West-

Ten years after "Operation Phantom Fury", remnants of the MEC invasion force in Western Iraq regrouped and garrisoned in Fallujah, a city famed for its numerous mosques. Local sympathizers took up arms and rapidly swelled the ranks of the fast-growing insurgent force. In response to the troubling uprising, the U.S. Marine 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines has arrived at the scene, ready to subdue and neutralize the insurgents in an orchestrated urban assault. A pro-government Iraqi division has been tasked with striking the eastern portion of the city, with plans to rendezvous with the Marines at the city center by the end of the operation. Facing daunting alleyways, rooftops, and roads littered with IEDs, the Marines have a tough mission ahead of them just like their predecessors. However this stronghold of the insurgents must be crushed if peace and stability is to be achieved in this region.

Yamalia-

Vast reserves of oil and natural gas has recently been discovered in an island named Yamalia north of the Bering Strait, in waters between mainland Russia, Alaska, and Canada. With its economy in shambles from oil shortages, an expeditionary force of Russian Naval Infantry swiftly occupied the island, where a Canadian oil production plant has been constructed. Tensions grew between the two countries, hotly contesting their claim on the island. A contingent of Canadian forces seized the eastern portion of Yamalia, and the stalemate ended when the Russians launched a preemptive strike on the freshly disembarked Canadian troops. Reminiscent of the Falkland War, both nations agreed to limit warfare to this island, struggling to wrestle control over this oil-rich territory, vital to economic success for either side.

Quikli, an uneducated extrapolation based on this chart would suggest you need to switch the roles in your story.

Yeah, a little briefing about what happened BEFORE the battle wouldn't hurt would it?

I like the map-briefs, they give that little bit of depth to the map. They don't need to be realistic, just give a really simple introduction to the map.
