RPG Warheads

Post by Slightchance »

I am just curious how common it is to encounter various types of RPG warheads in current insurgent situations. I know there are several types of warheads with varying effectiveness against vehicles.

This article suggests that the most common are HE or HEAT rounds, but gives no other information about which is more common.
Rocket propelled grenade

This site suggests that they are not often used against armored targets, which I doubt, but it could be due to a lesser frequency of anti-tank rounds.
Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs)

Wikipedia explains that there are many different types of warheads out there, though I take all of the statistics with a big grain of salt.
RPG-7 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Again according to wikipedia, the site suggests that HE rounds are not effective against vehicles but are mainly an anti-infantry weapon.

What I would like to discuss, without turning this into a WE NEED MORE WARHEADS thread (as there are many already), is the frequency of the powerful anti-armor warheads and does the RPG in PR currently seem to fit with the types of ammunition that is most often available?

There's a difference between an HE RPG head, and a HEAT round which is the one in game. HE is just high explosive, for taking out soft targets. HEAT stands for High Explosive Anti Tank which is specifically designed for anti tank/anti armor purposes. Also, I think more types of RPG warheads have already been suggested, right now we have the Single Warhead and Tandem Head HEAT round in game.

Indeed, I was not requesting more, I was just curious if there were more HEAT or HE rounds currently available to insurgents and if using the HEAT round is therefore realistic or not given the amounts available to insurgents. I honestly have no idea, but was hoping to discuss this.

Thank you for your response though, and I apologize for any confusion in this post. I also realize that currently the RPGs fire HEAT rounds in game, and that these are effective against armor whereas the HE rounds are much less effective against armor.

There are... what's the name? Tadem warheads? Pretty good against Bradley's :)

Once me and my friend shot 2 Tadem RPGs at the same time at a Bradley. The entire enemy team DC'ed. True story.
Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

Tandem are good vs tanks, normal rpg grenades can take down puny cute Bradleys.

Ok, i actually dont have idea on what types of warheads insurgents use IRL, but i guess that in game they use normal HEAT and tandem HEAT warheads, both more effective against armored targets than soft targets. Am i right?

Reminds me of when I teamed up with a friend, we both got RPGs and then co-ordinated against enemy vehicles. Killed a few strykers and humvees doing it on Ramiel and a few warriors + scimmies on Basrah.

To answer your question:

I'm not 100% sure about other countries, but Polish armed forces use primarily (if not only, I'll ask my dad) HEAT rounds. I believe all Warsaw-pact countries use this type of warhead. Generally, the single stage HEAT round is the most widespread RPG7 round. So yeah, it is completely realistic for insurgents to have those.

Sauce: personal experience/family in the military

I'll be happy to answer more questions about the RPG if you have any

On this photo you can see a chinese made anti-personal warhead (maybe type 69-1F), and on the left the most common HEAT warhead.

That's a photo of a destroyed Dingo after they had ambushed Bundeswehr in Kunduz, killing 4.
Afaik most of the guys on this pic have been chased down and killed not long after by US special forces. Thanks for that...

Also in that same pic the guy in the middle has a TBG-7V thermobaric warhead on his RPG. I'm pretty sure the HEAT rounds are the most widely used based off of pictures, documentary's, internets videos, and several bad action movies, but that doesn't mean that they don't use the other types either.

Also, OMG1!!11~! W3 N33D this!!!

Considering how wide-spread the optics for RPG are:
EbairSoft Airsoft parts & Tactical Gear - RPG 4X Scope EB0049 (even airsoft websites have them).

Yes, we need optics.

Thanks for the responses guys. I suspected they were quite common, what those sites, (mainly wikipedia - which I know has some problems) mentioned, is that others are just as common, so I wasn't sure how many were actually being used.
