What is an Eotech sight exactly?
The title pretty much says it all. I've only a rudimentary knowledge of these things. From my research it says that it creates a holographic aimpoint. While this sounds cool, what does that exactly mean? It seems to be common with various armies and police forces so there must be some advantages. I'm curious what are the advantages and drawbacks? What makes them different than say, an aimpoint? Or is everything just a manner of personal preference?
Sorry for my lack of knowledge but I am curious, as each person I talk to seems to tell me something different about it.

I mean come on, why would you post a question in a forum before googling?

Hollographic sight is ( what I think ) a sight in wich the red-dot "follows" the gun, so you don't need to aim exactly by looking right in to it.
So you can aim with the gun and shoot precise without aiming down the sight as you need to do with other sights.
Kinda hard to explain but in this video you can see it;

Thank you all, and yes, I did google it but I just didn't understand it exactly. I appreciate the feedback. So as far as game terms go, do any of the advantages mentioned here, such as having both eyes open etc, transfer into the game? Or will we just need to wait and see?

Should be quite similar to the red dot sights already in the game. Barring the (potentially) clearer field of view, none of the real world advantages of optical sights over irons carry over to gaming, especially on BF engine. The weapons don't fire in the exact direction the barrel is pointed at anyway - with some expections like Red Orcestra and OFP/ArmA - which basically negates the optical sights' advantage of always remaining on target, and there's no need to worry about eye relief or proper sight picture.Slightchance wrote:So as far as game terms go, do any of the advantages mentioned here, such as having both eyes open etc, transfer into the game?
In addition your weapon is always perfectly lined up with your "eye" anyway, which in turn negates any appreciable difference between the older collimator sights with their possible parallax induced aiming error and the newer holographic technology.

That's too bad, but thank you all for the quick responses. I appreciate them.

Re: What is an Eotech sight exactly?
The most noticeable difference is that in eotech you aim through a circle with a dot in middle, while in collimator sights you aim through a single red dot.
This is possible due to the difference of how the light is brought to your eye.
In collimator, there is a single illuminative dot in the base of the collimator between the eye and the reflexive glass. The light goes to the glass and reflects to your eye.
On the other hand, in the holographic sights, there is a crystal inside the sights, with the light emitter under it, done this way, it allows you to see more than only 1 dot.
Maybe i will find some time to draw ilustrative pictures

If I remember correctly the other advantage with eotechs is that they will work properly even with broken/cracked glass.

an eotech works the same way as a heads up display.
Harrod200:"Fire.exe has committed an illegal operation and has been shut down"
Raniak : "Warning: May crash if fired upon."
M4sherman: "like peter pan but with tanks"
[R-MOD]Eddiereyes909 (on sim tower) "It truly was the game of my childhood and has led to me getting my degree in industrial engineering."

Me thinks it could be nice if aimpoint sights would have a bit less deviation settle time than ironsights because all u have to do IRL is look thru the scope instead of aligning the irons with each other.Saarna wrote:Should be quite similar to the red dot sights already in the game. Also if now we had (for idk wat reasons) AK74's with irons and AK74's with eotech, id go ironsights because they block alot less of ur screen while ur accuracy stays same.

Re: What is an Eotech sight exactly?
i agree with that. i personally have a aimpoint on my ar15 and it is way quicker getting your sights on the target.Nebsif wrote:Me thinks it could be nice if aimpoint sights would have a bit less deviation settle time than ironsights because all u have to do IRL is look thru the scope instead of aligning the irons with each other.

for those of you that dont shoot, with iron sights you need to have proper head/cheek placement on the butt stock to properly line up your sights and shots.
with the aimpoint/eotech all you need to do is see the red dot, it will always be on whatever it is aiming at no matter which angle you are looking at it through.
