Looking for experience

Post by Sclafani »

Hello, I'm fairly new to the whole Project Reality thing and I've got a few questions. First I'd like to introduce myself. I'm eighteen years old and from Detroit, Michigan. I love realism and like to learn and have fun whilst playing, but nine chances out of ten I've received zero help from players. I've got a microphone and enjoy squad based team play, but get torn apart when I don't know -exactly- how to achieve said goals. I'm asking you, as a community, if there's any experienced players out there willing to help tone a few tactics down with me and have a laugh while we're at it. I play specifically on public servers because as said earlier, I'm new to the community. Hopefully I posted this in the correct section, if I didn't I'm very sorry. So please guys, help me out!

Go on the Co-op servers first and learn all the basics there. People there are much, much more willing to teach others how to play in the casual environment there. I often go to the co-op servers to chill out and have taught a half dozen players how to do everything there is ingame.

So ask around and get some practice in the assets within co-op before joining a full fledged public server.

Welcome to the forums.

Most players will be helpful, just be sure to say that you are new to the mod. Don't try to use kits or vehicles until you fully understand how to operate them. Takes a bit of practice. At the beginning try to stick with infantry squads. If you don't know how to use something, ask on VOIP how it works. If you have any questions related to the deviation system, simply browse the forums, it is fully explained. Always listen to your SL.

Sure, you will encounter SLs that will kick you from squads or people whose sole response to your question is "RTFM (read the fkin manual)". But keep in mind that most of PR community will be friendly, so don't let that get you down. Be polite and respectful, and above all be a teamplayer and you'll get a hang of PR very fast.

Also, while questions don't hurt, some matters have been discussed and explained to death before, so before asking anything on the forums, use the search function.

My experience with new players are essentialy twofold. One's the naive bright-eyed kid who can't hit anything with his gun and is awestruck every time he gets a chopper ride, and I've got no quarrel with them, they want to learn. But then there's the idiot who goes "WHAT IS SHOVEL FOR" "HOW DO I USE VEHICLES" and so forth, and yes, I do venomously tell them to go read a manual. Because that's what you're goddamn told 14 and a half times before you launch the .exe.

What exactly are you looking for? basic infantry skills , apc/ifv, tank training, or piloting aircraft?

I would disagrree with joining small squads. In larger squads you play a smaller part of it wich means less responsibility for your actions, because if you run a 2 man spec ops squad you both guys need to be ultra skilled in everything because small mistake means big mistake with such a small force.

So join a ENG or INF or ENG VOIP etc. squad, say that youre new and if its a good SL he should explain stuff to you.

I am always willing to take new people ho have common sense into my squad and teach them. Sadly if i ever get someone new, he is completely retarded, without a mic and not giving a damn. Those people get a kick.

So true. Just let everyone in the squad know that you're new. Otherwise they'll think you're just another noob and ignore you or kick you.

For basic infantry, if you're having a hard time hitting shit, go look up the deviation tables.

One huge mistake I see new guys do all the time is insta-proning as soon as they see someone. To the best of my knowledge, this resets the deviation timer and you won't hit anything for about 5 seconds. If you're standing and have to engage, crouch. It doesn't reset the deviation timer like insta-proning does.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the way it is because insta-proning in battle isn't realistic.

Personally, I've had to ask a few newbies to find another squad. Not because they were causing problems, but because they were too inefficient for something that needed an experienced player. Other times, there was too much going on to be able to walk the person through.

For you, a n0.ob like all of us at one time:
-Be patient and focus on the things you are good at so far. If someone can't teach you, understand that they may just be busy or something.
-Eventually you will find players that will make good buddies for you. Get experience with and from them. SL or SM buddies, it's all good. As buddies, they usually have a bit more patience explaining the game workings and whatnot.
-When you're uncomfortable with something (using assets, performing tasks that you know little about, etc.), tell them that you would rather not, and don't feel bad about it. Look up or practice it alone/with buddies later so you have an idea of what to do next time.
-Crashing and losing assets is a big no-no. Assets also includes special kits. If you don't know how to use them, don't.

Thanks a ton guys, I stay away from vehicles and kits other than medic for the most part. I found out that I'm one hell of a tank gunner, so I'll be sticking to that for a while. I'm still confused on some things but I'm going to take Johncro up on his offer and get a bit of hands on with someone.

Maniac, I'm looking for infantry/general knowledge training I suppose. Basically, what are the nicknames for things that people that have been playing for a while use, how to spot and accurately communicate enemy presence etc.

FOB->forward operations base, that's the pile of sandbags with a net around it where you can spawn if you built it

CAS->Close Air support (provided by choppers/jets)

Gary->Insurgent bomb truck, most powerful ins vehicle.

Rally->rally point, now used rarely

kp/keypad->used for giving precise coordinates of something, ex: Drop me off at E4kp6

LAT->light anti tank kit

HAT->heavy anti tank kit

GL->Grenade launcher

OMGWTFBBQ->Insane pwnage.

"I'm dead dead"->player cannot be revived, sometimes said without the second "dead"

all I can think of.
