Post by IronTaxi »

Hey...any advice?

Want to go as high as I can essentially with out going bleeding edge new.

I have geforce 7800gtx pci_e slot I assume.

Assuming I want to stay in gefroce family...what are the series I should be looking at?

I am not exactly sure which card you have since you state both 7900 and 7800.
Anyways, I had a 7900 GTX which i upgraded to 9600 GT and it was a significant change (although though 7900 was ~500€ and 9600 was ~190€ when I bought them brand new).
So sry to say that but any card that fits on the PCI-E is probably better than 7900 GTX. Leave your hands off SLI because getting a 2nd 7900 will be hard (rare) and thus unneccessarily expensive.

I usually go by this side to compare performances: PassMark Software - Video Card Benchmark Charts

I am not exactly sure what you expect of us here. If you are going for used cards and want to make sure you are not getting ripped off you should tell us which ones you have in mind.

It would help if you had your PC specs listed in your profile... What resolution do you play at?

Regardless of the answer to that , if you want to stay in the green camp with high performance and not break the bank, there's really only one answer to your question:

-GTX460 1GB version (not the 768mb version).

It's about USD$250, performs a smidgen worse than a HD5850, and runs quite cool apparently.

On the ATI side... the HD5850 or HD5830 are your choices in that sort of price range, and fit just above and below the GTX460 in price & performance.

In the benchmarks the Ati HD5770 rates not very far under the big ones like HD5800s or the GTX 400s.

However you can get one for 150-170$. Which is my opinion much better then 250$ :)

Check out the benchmark page I posted at the end of my post.

Sum of FPS benchmarks (GTX460 / HD5770)
400.3 / 261.7 = ~53% higher performance

Difference of price inc shipping (GTX460 / HD5770)
$232 / $143 = ~62% higher price

So the performance doesn't quite scale 1:1 with the price increase, but it's relatively close. This means you can basically choose either card depending on:
- Budget
- How important is eye candy

For me the latter is always more important

Also keep in mind, Games like PR and Arma, Also greatly depend on HDD, RAM and CPU.

Im pretty convinced that a HD5770 on a SSD, Quad / Six Core with sufficiant RAM will do just as well as a GTX460 as far as PR (and possibly Arma2) is concerned.

Of course a GTX460 will be more future proof. But Keep in mind that this 100$ saved gets you very close to a new Solid State Drive :)

Ive been reading alot on the subject lately as Im building a new system at the start of next month, and im on a budget. (Not that I dont wish I had the $$ to spare on all the super duper parts)

So in the end, its all about the money you are ready to invest.

200$ + - GTX460
100$ + - HD5770
100$ or Less - 9800 GT, basicly a 8800gt (really wouldnt recommend it as the 5770 is barely 50 bucks ahead, but its an option)

The GTS450 is out... But it's around the same performance as a GTX260, sometimes less. For around $130, it's a "fair Fermi" :D

Today GTX 460 is considered as a really good price/performance card. But I can?t help to think that when you say that you have a 7800GTX that you also have a somewhat old cpu. If you could tell us your cpu it would be easier to find a gpu that doesn?t create a "bottle neck".

Because if you get a new decent card. Your cpu might not be able to keep up with it. So your limitations are because that you?re cpu can?t handle more while your gpu still can deliver more. And then you?re in need of a better cpu. It?s better to have a good cpu and gpu balance than a good gpu and a older cpu. Unless you plan to upgrade everything else later because then you can get a decent card now and get a better cpu then.

Also remember to check how many PCIe power cables you have on your PSU so you don?t get a card that requires more cables than you have. While you?re at it, check so your PSU can deliver enough power for your new card.

Words of wisdom, You tend to forget that when you got your head into benchmarks all day long trying to figure out which one has more bang for the money. lol
