Will XP 64bit run more then 4gig RAM?

Post by JohnnyTheIED »

Quick questions for the experts. Couldnt seem to find the answer to that question after hours of googlin.

I dont want to bother with all the hassle and tweakings involved in using Win7 for my new build. Id rather use good ol XP that I know well.

But will Windows XP 64bit run more than 4 gigs of RAM ? I know that logicly the answer would be yes but Im not sure!

I know about the 32bit being limited but everytime I ask for more RAM capability it tells me to go Windows 7 x64.

Thanks

iirc 64 bit XP is supposed to be pretty unstable.

If you already have x64 XP then fine, but if its a choice between x64 XP and Win7 x64, choose the latter.
There isn't really much hassle with Win7 64, most things run out of the box, unless you have a LOT of very old software to run.

As some posts above already mentioned, go for Windows 7 x64 instead of the x64 version of XP. You said that you don?t want to bother the hassle tweaking Windows 7 but I can tell you that you will have more hassle with the x64 version of XP because of the lack of drivers or lack of up to date drivers. The driver support isn?t very good for XP x64 but very good for Windows 7 x64. (With driver support I mean the amount of drivers available or that are updated on regular basis)

The answer for your question is yes, it will support 4GB of ram or more but I would recommend Windows 7 x64 instead because of the reasons above my post and the reason I mentioned in my post.

Alright thanks alot guys, That definitely helps me make a choice.

I just saw so many posts like Win7 problems Arggggg!!!! Help! that I was kinda efraid of going with it lol.

But if you say XP x64 isnt taken care of properly for drivers and app support, Win7 x64 is definitely the way to go, even if I gotta tweak it up a bit to run PR smoothly.

Thanks again all!

Win7 x64 is preferable.

NOTE: Different versions of Win7 have different amounts of maximium supported RAM!

Win7 Starter has only a max of 2GB!
