I use and love mumble, but I only use it on TG. I voted that I don't use it because no one else is on.

For a while I've have been thinking about joining mumble on every server i join but I've never gotten around to it.

I'll tell you one thing. If any admins see either |TG|rexer or Grexer on a server and I'm not in mumble feel free to kick me regardless of it being a rule or not.

Maybe mumble needs a mascot? (JK)

Join, say ingame "I'm on mumble, team 2 is MEC" and you shall profit, don't be a sheep mate.
No longer will I be a sheep.
To the people saying "I don't use it because no one else uses it" You are part of the problem. Wonder why they aren't using it? Probaly for the same reason, but if you all started to use it, no matter what, then alot more people would be using it.
True, but that will no longer apply to me.

sector7g wrote: The main reason that I prefer not to use mumble is as a result of invasion of privacy. I understand the fundamental principle of mumble and the idea that you can hear what squad members friend and foe are talking about over a certain distance however, I may be having a private conversation with a clan mate that I do not want any one around me hearing. You must remember that this is a social event for friends in most cases and I for one do not want some of the unsavoury characters that I have met on PR listening in on my PRIVATE conversation. I mean do you really want (the one who's name we do not mention on this forum) listening in to your conversation, recording it then putting it on some crappy Utube video ???
I really do not get this point. If you wish to speak of private matters, speak using your vent bind or xfire chat. Mumble is just as public as team/global chat. Now tell me, when was the last time someone used K or J chat for private matters?
sector7g wrote: The next reason I have elected to opt out of mumble is a little petty, granted however, I shall mention it. Over the last few patch's I have been militantly kicked out of servers and squads alike because I elected to not use mumble - simply put I don't kick you out or stop you from being in my squad just because your VOIP doesn't work... To cut a long story short: I did not appreciate the elitist attitude perused to try and make mumble fashionable. It actually got my back up a little and had a negative rather than positive effect on me.
I would have done this as well to be honest. Nobody wants to play with a deaf soldier. I recall too many times when a none-mumble squadmate mucked something up. Having to remember to use VOIP radio for the handicapped players feels like babysitting, and as a squad leader I have better things to do. Fashionable? This isn't high school; when something catches on, it's because of practicality.
sector7g wrote: Last month I was on a server where mumble was malfunctioning and as a result every one on mumble that was on our side could hear all communications of commander on the opposite team (unbeknown to him!!!). Involuntary communications intercept across the board...(need I say more?)
Not once have I ever seen this happen in the 8 months that I have been using this program. It was probably due to personal fault. I challenge everyone else to recall a situation like this.

In my opinion, the only reasons to be not using Mumble that seem valid are:

1: It simply does not work for some unknown reason that you have TRIED to fix
2: You like simpler gameplay
3: Alt-Tabbing causes you to crash
4: You do not own a mic

Any other reasons are just excuses for laziness and ignorance really :/

Playing on a Server where every non-squadmate is contactable in a 3d space is an amazing experience and I urge everyone to give it a go. I simply can not play on non-mumble servers anymore, it almost feels like vBf2. If your server doesn't have players using mumble, spread the word about it or start mumble squads with a small group of friends.

My opinion.... in theroy Communisum works. but it is the human factor that distroys the concept. i believe the same applies to mumble. i personaly think that pr is a game of communication, that being said for me too much communication is just as bad as none at all. if all players where mature and used the tool as it was ment too then i may have a different opinion. but as the old PR saying goes, "you can mod the game, but you cannot mod the players". as many folks have already pointed out listening to everyone talk at once is difficult. but using in game comms lets me at least kick the problem player within my squad. being forced to listen to complaints about " how the F%&K did i miss at 10 ft,?!?!?!?" by everyone on the team decreases my want to use it. having to go and mute my self seems redundent. or having to alt tab out every so often because someone eles is spamming the comms makes it painfull and not worth my limited amount of playtime that i do have.

just my opinion.

Err...Server client?le fail? ;)

If anything, I find it reduces idle chat over VoIP, which can be very problematic. It also allows me to communicate with that blue guy with the ammo for my AT, aswell as that APC thats walking into an enemy ambush. That kind of communication is, to put it lightly, invaluable.

Of course people may have tech problems with it, but they seem to affect very few players. If your having problems with people spamming and generally being a pain: change server much?
I roll with solid guys, no trouble at all

tbh I find the built in voip to be waaay more spammy. With positional audio at least the guy aint as loud if you are the 5th guy in line. Thats a big reason why I would like to see more use of mumble, less spammy and if there is somebody flapping his mouth in your squad, you can just move over there and he wont be as loud, while you suffer him in full volume when he uses the game voip and you cant temporarily deafen your ingame voip either.

I think I can sum up this entire thread with one, obnoxiously sized phrase:
No one uses it, therefore no one uses it because no one uses it on most servers

It's a vicious cycle that's very similar to that of seeding a server. If you don't have players, many times it is very difficult to get players.

It's fantastic in those niche places where it's actually used, though (Alpha, TG, occasionally some others) and events.

I use and like mumble but everytime someone joins a channel, it expands. I got dual screen with the names listed so I can see who talks to me but with this makes it harder :\

You can enable overlay in mumble. You can also adjust where it pops up. That means whenever somebody is talking in your mumble channel, his name pops up on the ingame screen. You can customize this by font type color and where it pops up on the screen. As soon as he is done talking his name dissapears, if you set it that way.

Too hard to set-up. Compared to TS it's a hassle, and it crashes all too often.
