Newbie Question

Post by bmarcoux »

Have just bought BF2 and downloaded PR. Have been playing the demo for a couple days before buying so have a basic understanding of the game. My question is would I be better to play BF2 for awhile and get better or jump right in to PR. Would really like some suggestions from some of you "Vets" here on the best way to get started. Thanks for any help.

For basics, you need play the original version, but if you are quick learner, read the manual and try out with co op and then go to deployment. (Manual is must)

PR is like the Mecca of teamwork in games. If you're new often players will help you out if you join a squad and are willing to learn. You can also read the PR manual, and while its not updated for .9 it should still be a huge help. I wouldn't say playing BF2 beforehand would be very helpful, the games are universes apart.
Basically, read the manual, learn the controls, join a squad in a game and tell them you're new.

good question, i think getting used to the basics of the game you would need to have played bf2 for a while (which you have played the demo) so you could probably jump into PR if you have an understanding of the squads and all the rest of it.

Best way to learn is to get used to certain things in coop then jump into a deployment server try joining squads called INF VOIP or TEAMWORK VOIP or something along those lines as they are normally the people who want to play the game properly :) another thing i recommend is master the rifleman (scoped) kit before you start learning more advanced things such as AR, LAT or other kits

Hope this helps :D

EDIT: LAT and AR are abreviations for Light AT and Automatic rifleman ;)

Do you think you can avoid taking a chopper, when you know you're not going to be able to use it? Or would you choose not to take the sniper rifle, when you're told not to?

If so, I would suggest you not to get into the world of bunny hops and nade spam. Just read the manual, move with WASD, shoot with mouse, duck with CTRL, do what you're told and you're good to go.

e: Apparently playing football while writing a message gives a few-minute gap for ninjas.

Battlefield 2 can be an entertaining game no doubt about that. It's a more meaningless sense of fun though and it can quickly become boring.

Project Reality is a more challenging game. It too can become boring, but for a different reason. The reason is Teamwork. If there is a lack of teamwork in your squad or on your team Project Reality becomes boring.

BF2 won't help you in a way that jumping into PR wont. Either way when you join a squad in PR remember to tell your Squad Leader that you are new to PR. Preferably with a microphone, but text is fine too.

Don't request kits without getting permission from your Squad Leader first. Alot of new players feel attracted to the Sniper kit or using heavy vehicles ( Tanks, APCs, Helicopters, Planes) which is only natural considering their value to the team. However, most new players fail at operating these kits or vehicles which becomes very frustrating for the rest of the team. Thats why you should start out easy with infantry squads or practise in Co-Op servers for aircraft.

If a Squad Leader kicks you for being new then dont take it personal, just keep trying. In the end its worth it :-P

PS: If your using text to communicate with your squad then they wont be able to see what you type to them when you are dead.

Tahnk you all for the quick response and suggestions. Would help at all starting in SP. I tried this in the demo and it was a joke. Everybody just running around by them self. Has this been updated better in PR? Thanks

Judge it yourself ;) Here is an example of a PR insurgency round as bluefor side.

Just jump straight into PR, vBF2 will only add to the confusion. Remember these few things in PR:

Anything over 50m you should use semi-auto and wait a couple of seconds before firing due to deviation.

You can't jump and shoot so don't even try it. You will also be unable to fire for a few seconds after landing.

Don't go prone and shoot when you run into enemies, deviation goes crazy to make dolphin diving like this useless. Maintain your current stance and engage instead.

Assets have several restrictions put on them, learn these before using assets on live servers. Choppers need to warm up, tanks need two people to use and have a warm up timer on the turret, stuff like that.

Just go basic rifleman when you first start playing, inform squad leaders that you're new so that they know not to give you assets you may be unfamiliar with and ask for help.

The demo will have been enough. It's good having played BF2 before simply because you got through the annoying "press left mouse button to kill things" messages and know how to join and create a squad, how the spawn system works (though it has been majorly changed - see the manual) and how the comm-rose works etc. (again, huge changes to that).

Get in squad, tell your squad leader(SL) you are new and have fun.
Couple things you may wanna now thath you are not confused:
HAT=Heavy anti-tank
LAT=Light anti-tank
AR=automatic rifleman, also called LMG(light machinegun)
FOB=Firebase/Forward outpost
Tracked=Means your vehicle is hit badly and you cant move.
