Graphic settings
This is a quick recommendation guide to video setting of bf2 based on performance and realism. I've done some research and tried all the settings to see the difference. I also tried some on EOD mod since PRV will have that kinda terrain.
Terrain: recommended med
There is little difference between medium and high. You'll just slow down your FPS at high. Unless you really want to see great detail in grass while going prone a foot away there is no reason for it. As for low it has less detail for performance but it stops drawing grass at certain point. So low is a little cheap since others can't hide.
Effects: recommended med
This has no change in detail or performance on each level except that med and higher have bullet holes.
Geometry: recommended high
There is little difference in the actual geometry of objects. At the highest settings you can see tanks, people, etc. at farther distance. So if you don't care about that set it to low.
Textures: Recommended med
Textures uses mostly your video RAM so you might want to check that. High offers slightly better textures but cause loading times of map to rise up. Low is the best for performance and doesn't affect realism but the DEVs spent a long time on those textures and they're pretty good.
Lighting: Recommended med
On low there are almost no shadows. It's cheap against people trying to hise and very unrealistic. Med and high seem to have no difference.
Dynamic shadows: Recommended low
THIS HAS A GREAT AFFECT ON PERFORMANCE. If you get lag this is the 1st to turn off. As for realism all it will do is tell you if someone is around the corner. Low should do the job.
Dynamic light: Recommended low
I didn't see any difference on detail on higher settings. It will help you see people firing at you with little performance issue. On night maps it will also come in handy.
AA and texture filtering no recomendation
any setting would do. Texture filtering will sharpen those pesky enemies at far distances but i could hit them just fine on low. AA should follow TF (low=no AA, med=x2 high=x4)
View distance 100%
Self explanatory. It's your last resort if the lag is still bad.
I hope this help some of you. (turning off dynamic shadows allowed me to go from low settings to med-high settings) This will help anything that uses the battlefield 2 engine. Including 2142 for those who have it.

The glass is neither half empty nor half full, it's just twice the size it needed to be.

Thanks for the advice gr770
...and wonder - how wrong you are
There are loads of reasons why bums like me can't afford a upgrade/new PC.

Re: Graphic settings
If you want good performance, and still have the game look good, these are what I use:
Terrain: Low
Effects: Low
Geometry: High
Textures: High
Lighting: Low
Dynamic Shadow: Low
Dynamic Light: Low
AA: x4 IIRC
View Distance: 100%
Terrain: Low
Effects: Low
Geometry: High
Textures: High
Lighting: Low
Dynamic Shadow: Low
Dynamic Light: Low
AA: x4 IIRC
View Distance: 100%

I had about 500 fps on Fallujah some weeks ago.

Is 6gigs of ram and win7 64bit enough to play on High textures settings without "CTD" between one or two maps played? Can anyone play this on Hight textures without any "CTD" at all? (related to Ram and map changes leak)

Re: Graphic settings
Me neither, the texture related CTDs are mostly because of low end GPU, sometimes even RAM. If they appear after some time of gaming, you just have to reset your account. That means-->go to documents BF2 profiles and cancel everything there. That should solve the problem. Did at least for me[R-DEV]AfterDune wrote:I never crash at high textures. Perhaps I'm just lucky.

Re: Graphic settings
You need to have at least 4 gb of RAM to play Pr. Half that and nothing will work right. I went from 2 gb DDR2 667 to 2gb DDR2 667 and 2 gb DDR2 800. Works pefectly now, I can have shit running in the background, and alt tab with no problems.

Re: Graphic settings
Changing the settings does not affect my performance, like at all, except for smoke. I think the one thing that breaks my performance is when my onboard graficcard gets olverloaded and starts using shared memory. On maps like Beirut and Basrah the performance is flawless, on maps like foolsroad and everything with a lot of trees or Bushes eh not so much.
As soon as I get my 5850 the performance is gonna be outtahere.

Re: Graphic settings
I just don't get it, this game is ancient, even my bro can play it on his relic of a work Pc. If u struggle to play this then it's laughable.
Upgrade tight wads. Think of what you've wasted your money on recently when u could have saved.
No more graphic settings related threads for BF2 PR please. Please

Yes, this game might be ancient but PR has taken it to a whole new level where people like me can't run it maxed. Laugh at meShrivey wrote:I just don't get it, this game is ancient, even my bro can play it on his relic of a work Pc. If u struggle to play this then it's laughable.

Re: Graphic settings
Thanks for the feedback about ram VS High textures settings.
Computer setup now:
4 gigs of ram and win XP (as in 3gigs of ram that my OS can handle). I don?t believe that my GPU is slowing things down; ATI HD 4870 and 1 gig of video ram(not that low end)
So the plan is to buy one extra stick of 2gig ram and upgrade to win7 x64 and hopefully less crashes between map-changes, especially on maps like Fallujah and Silent Eagle.
I remember the big change in map-loading speed and fewer crashes when I upgraded from 2gigs to current 4gig setup.
I really want to go back to High texture settings, and properly enjoy all the textures as it was intended.

Re: Graphic settings
Go with High textures. It's the only way you can read all the easter eggs like the Fisher-Price logo on the radio in the FOBs.
A better guide would be list of the performance-to-usefulness/graphics ratio as opposed to a "recommended" setting. Unlike consoles, the PC market is retarded in the sense that there isn't just one set of specs you need to look at, but rather all the varying levels of power for each component the consumer could be using.
Also, the difference in "Effects" between medium and high lies in draw distance, as far as I've noticed.

PR have maxed the game out, yes, however it's still extremely un-demanding compared with most software.Maverick wrote:Yes, this game might be ancient but PR has taken it to a whole new level where people like me can't run it maxed. My heart bleeds for you Maverick, that really annoying sound you can just hear is me playing the tiniest violin
for you. Hope you can upgrade soon mate.
