Can I Set High Textures New Patch?

Post by jackcr »

I am just wondering if the High Texture crash is something that can be fixed or has been fixed in the new patch? I have 6 gig of ram, Geforce 460GTX, i7 930 cpu, and am running windows7 ultimate. At the moment I have set my textures on medium because for some reason on my other pc I would crash to desktop when set textures to high. Does anyone know why this happens and should I be able to play without any crashes on this new pc? I really want high textures but if it's going to keep crashing it's not worth it. Thanks!!

I would like to know too, my currently pc is a dual core AM2+ 4600+, 2gigs, gts250, win xp, and even thou I close all the running process and have enough RAM, when I set up to high I get crashes after map changes.

Im gonna buy a new pc in the end of the year and it bothers me to know that this still happens with high end pcs.

My crashes don't just happen during map changes they also happened while I am in game. I also seem to get a lot more crashes to desktop when I am flying choppers and the textures are set to high.

actually whats funny is that i have 3gigs of ram, an ATI HD4890, and an AM2 6000+ Athlon 64 X2 3.0ghz dual core with win 7 and I never crash, even with my sound at Ultra High and an X-Fi card...

Do high textures look much better then medium ones? Anyone got a link to compare medium and high? That way I can make my mind up to change it or not.

They're a whole lot sharper.

They are a lot better, but it crashes all the time.. Even with my 12GB of ram, i7 920 and GTX295 it's impossible to run it on high textures.. I can try to run it but it makes PR unstable and I don't like CTD's in the middle of my game so you just have to run it on medium for now I guess..

for the texture crashes its important how much V-Ram you have, only set the textures to HIGH if you have 1024GB of Vram (for Crossfire/SLI setups you need 1GB of Grafic-Ram per GPU)

i have 2x 896M ( 2 x GTX260 ) and it run fine for me, even with FSAA SLI16Q. I run the game with every thing at high, i got no crash.

allways those strange memory sizes on nvidia cards, actually i meant more, that its not going to work with 512mb vram, interessting info that 896mb seams to be enough.

(I've allways been ATI/AMD user, and they use 512 or 1024 as next bigger memory size)

I believe I only have 512 and I never crash on high textures... My pc also isn't the greatest in the world, so the reason why PR crashes for people on high textures is still a weird one to me.

That could be true, the Nvidia GeForce GTX295 has 1792 MB on 2 gpu's so about 900 MB per gpu.

I've got 4gb RAM, Nvidia 9800GT and E6750 CPU.
Most times it runs without any problems but sometimes it crashes on high texture.

But question now is:
Will it be fixed with 0.95?

To answer this question as simply as possible, if you can't set textures to high for your rig in v0.91 for w/e reason, it is unlikely you will be able to for v0.95

Each rig is different and as such, if you can or can not run PR with textures on high is down to your rig setup and if you have enough memory etc to manage all the textures.

Some optimization work has been done for v0.95 but only a minimal amount while at the same time, many new assets have been added to the mod that will eat up even more memory so the optimization work and new assets probably balances itself out.

For v0.96 we do plan on doing more optimization work but this is not something we can do with the click of our fingers, it takes a huge amount of time in order to make the slightest improvements in terms of optimization for the most part so please dont expect a fix overnight. However I'm currently working on something that could drastically change the amount of textures needed to be loaded by all the players ingame which if it works like I'm hoping it will, could mean the difference between your PC being able to run PR in high gfx again but we will have to wait and see how it turns out.

I tested vRAM usage on fallujah iirc, high settings use a bit over 600MB. This won't necessarily crash the game, but it will certainly bottleneck it if you only have 512mb available as it will have to page to the main memory.
