Re: Chat in Server
teamchat about the strat or aynthing is good.
all chat about some BS (most of the time) or political discussion are annoying as hell.
I am really glad that there are "no spamming rules".
If you want to have a chitchat go to the forums or somewhere, not everybody is interested in things you like to discuss during the game.

Re: Chat in Server
I hate it because its very intrusive. When someone starts spamming useless text it takes up a large section of my screen and is distracting ( I read it to make sure its not important inter-SL comms) and its just a waste of time. Most of the time its really not funny or entertaining at all.
Personally, I wish more servers would kick for the childish taunting. i.e 'OMG LOL COBRA DOWN AHAHAH' Coming from you a guy sitting in a AA thinking he just achieved the most difficult task in all of PR. Really annoys me.
A !clear command would be nice for admins to clear chat.

Re: Chat in Server
Thank you all again for many replies.
Wow. I am surprised, that Reason I thought that can't be the core reason for 'no chat spam' seems to be the actual reason. Many of you replied that it takes up too much space on screen, other than important information are annoying to see, and it will push away Information typed for Team.
That brings logical question for me. Why do FPS game have chat system to begin with? Especially the 'All' chat. Important message can be shown on top left part of screen by server administrator, like most of important server information for clients are done currently. If it was included in game to begin with, it must have use for it that game makers intended for. I personally can't think of any other reson beside sharing useless chatter for fun.

Re: Chat in Server
Because most FPS' are made for people's enjoyment and having fun, but we can't have that at PR, oh no, we SHOULDN'T.
Naah, seriously, it's about self-restraint. Friendly competition between two teams apart from the game itself is always fun, it's just that if you act like a 13 year old, things get different.
Really, it looks like a nice fix would be to somehow separate teamchat from allchat. Allchat is usually admincalls/expressions of shock/w/e. Teamchat is about intel and coordination. Two separate areas where to talk would fix this easily, but it might be one of them hardcoded poxes.

Are you serious? how about important information needed sharing between players which the VoIP system does not cover ?Human_001 wrote: That brings logical question for me. Thats like saying, well there is a VoIP system... so i see no other reason for VoIP than to shout down it constantly at the top of my voice.. what ever possible reason could there be for VoIP? /sarcasm.
Just because it is in game, does not mean you should abuse it...

Re: Chat in Server
In regard to place you highlightened, I meant it for "All" chat. I can't think of any other reason for them other than to have chatter with people playing same game.
As for Important information, "Important message can be shown on top left part of screen by server administrator, like most of important server information for clients are done currently." As I typed there.
Many times Administrator just type there using command rather than typing anything on normal chat, because nobody notices as much as administrators wants.
Now reagarding your metaphor between VOIP and Chat, I don't really think typing funny random stuff on "All" chat is same to screaming on VOIP. ( Although here is alot of different "Screaming" tho.) If I were to compare screaming on VOIP to spam on all chat that is like typing something like ertgwjreriflk over and over.
No, no I am not talking about abusing the chat system. I don't see how chatting random thing for fun is abusing of game system. Now I'm guessing you are probably thinking, Because it is game server and not discussion forum, Please look at this from different persons point of view, who think chatting in FPS game is fun, as I wrote on my first post. I think everyone thinks differently, and nobody is all wrong.
But my question still remains. "Why do FPS game have chat system to begin with? Especially the 'All' chat." "If it was included in game to begin with, it must have use for it that game makers intended for."

Re: Chat in Server
Its simple,
Every one who has posted in this thread have said the same thing, unnecessary typing on the screen is useless, distracting and intrusive. Thus admins can and probably will include excessive and unnecessary use of it to be against the server rules.
thats it.
Why is it there in the first place? for the few times it is necessary to talk to the other team. "sharing useless chatter for fun" does not count as necessary talk.
Lets try from this point of view, PR is all about teamwork and cooperation. Because of this there is normally an overload of information sources ;
VoIP
3rd party (voip, ts)
in game chat (necessary stuff)
People dont want or need unnecessary Chat/stuff on their HUD or cluttering their already cluttered information sources. This effect is empathized in PR due to this, you will find less people care about "fun time chats" in all chat in games like vbf2 because they don't have the need/want to follow all sources of information in the game.

Re: Chat in Server
I think everyone is overreacting.
A bit of fun chat is always a nice to have and gives a little relief in already demanding game.
The chat is not annoying for me and I'm quite capable of separating "useless" chat with important ones.
What does annoy me is the constant server-messages at the top...

Re: Chat in Server
What about normal players who need to talk to admins? All chat is very useful for stuff like "Admin, we got someone placing mines below vehicles in our main", without having to be in the same team as the administrator. It can also be useful in certain non-game situations. Imagine you're doing beta testing, making a machinima, the round is about to end and you want to say good game to the enemy team, et cetera.

Yes, of course, we're not saying noone should ever use all chat. Just defending the server rules against spam.

Re: Chat in Server
Spam is something different then mentioned in this topic. In this topic, people talk about "useless" chat.
I like useless chat. It reminds me that i'm not playing mindless bots, but actual people with a life next to PR. It's something that forms a community. Not just this forum.
Like i said before..... I'm not annoyed by people making small talk on all chat, why can't you?

Re: Chat in Server
For the reasons posted, Nyte
There's voip where it's much easier to have some chatting with people while nothing is going on, but chat - you never know when something important will be said, and you block everyones screen with your text, not only your squad or w/e.
I personally don't like to see alot of chat, though I won't get angry just because someone says "nice try there guys" after a failed assault or sth. But the problem is - if everyone does it, it's spam. So since the rules can't say only x amount of chat is allowed, and admins are not always present (and able to react), a "only relevant chat" rule seems the best solution to me.

Re: Chat in Server
I would like to once again thank you all for replies. All replies were very helpful and constructive.
But... I still have this question. Why do FPS game have chat system to begin with.
When people first made FPS and software like this BF2, there must be more reason than just 'All chat could be useful in such situation'.
I would now like to invite Dev on this forum. They are developing mod and are closer to software development, so I think I have chance to get this answer. I think they might understand why software developer put in such feature on such software.

Well as long
as you're
not one of those
people that
talks
like
this,
I don't see why you would have been banned without warning.
And if they did warn you, you should have listened.
It all comes down to what the server rules are.
If you don't like 'em, either suck it up, buy your own server, or play somewhere else.
