Torrents...

Post by Forloc »

it's really annoying when no one seeds, and where I have 20mbps interwebs,
yet i'm getting less than 70kbps.... dl, and 200kbps+ ul

wah wah wah.

I'm done.

That is your connection problem, there are hundreds of seeds and this way pre-loading is more effective than direct links.

Torrenting really, really speeds up free distribution as everyone downloading it helps share the uploading. At the moment with a lot of people still downloading and not seeding it's going to be a little slow but I got max speed from the start to end (350kb/s). Currently uploading 70kb/s constant (upload limit) as well. Just give it some time you'll get up to speed soon and at least with torrents you can start and stop no problem.

As of October 1st 2010 openbittorrent.com is down permanently.
You (Devs) need to review your options and find another torrent announce to use.

Torrent client setup is key to fast torrents.

1 - make sure you are "connectible" Open them ports

2 - Set a upload limit per torrent. Don't ( I say it again) Don't "leach" at your full uploading speed. Torrents need to have some bandwidth over head room for extra traffic. So if your upload speed for your internet is 50KB. Set your max upload rate to 40KB global and and 20KB per active torrent. This is a guild line. play around to find what's best for your internet.

3 - Don't Super SEED. Super Seeding should only be done if there is only 1 SEED in total. When there is more than 1 SEED. Super SEED will slow down the SWARM. And as I am sure by now. There are lot's of seeds.

Just doing the above will see you max your lines (seeds depending)

But don't worry.

PR-Downloader will be ready for you end users who can not sort out torrents.

Honestly I don't see what was so bad, only took me about an hour for 3 parts and that was about 10 hours ago.

Yea, I just found that out, but our own tracker is still there.

I'm seeding right now and it took 30 minutes to download all three. Plus you have a week for it to download.

Seriously, every time there is a preload announcement, people complain about torrents.

Torrents are the way to go nowadays. It doesn't require alot of server bandwidth or space and it's faster than Direct Download.

Suck it up and wait for Friday or use that PR-Downloader thing.

Not that bad, I find randomizing my ports gets me up to my full download speed, don't ask me how, it just does :S

Go google search how to make them faster

You have all week do dl the files and think of it this way, now when release comes by all youl have to do is just start the installer and put in the password, youl be playing within minutes rather than hours as the entire community slows down servers trying to dl the mod all at once.

Yeah, I'm downloading all 3 files at once, Doesn't seem like a good idea, but better then waiting when everyone rushes in like a crowd on Black Friday..

I don't have a problem with torrents, but it's just my university doesn't allow me to download them off their network. Guess I'm gonna have to head into a town and do homework or something while I download each part off free wi-fi :P
