I would guess this has more to do with your torrent software then with the actual torrent you are downloading.

any recommendations? I've been using uTorrent for a while, but is there something better out there?

uTorrent is very lightweight, it's probably not it, so check your processes and see what is consuming so much CPU or memory.

If you find out it's uTorrent, see if you are using the latest version, because older version could have CPU 100% issues.

I use - and recommend - BitComet. Fast and efficient. Never had a problem with it.

This sounds like a case of HDD Trashing. Torrent protocol was never meant for large file packs. Just lots and lots of small ones. When you get files in a torrent that are around the 1 gig size. You will get HDD trashing. This can make your computer lockup for moments of time as the data is accessed and written to. And writing 1GB files can be slow depending on hardware
