some newbie questions

Post by Matt92 »

Hi, I'm new to this game (I've bought BF2 only because of PR), and I'd like to ask if someone could tell me a server name where i could get used to the game and English (I'm Hungarian so I don't really use English in my everyday life). Also where to join in Mumble?

For a start, co-op servers could be a good idea to get used to the weapons. Then, the servers are really up to your taste. Try something with low ping any many players on Tactical Gamer, Tactics & Teamwork, UK Warfare are good american/british servers. Your English looks reasonably good up there :) For mumble, you just start it up, click connect, and then just ok. It's all pre-set. Then search the name of the server and the team you are on in the mumble channels, to connect to the correct one. Just click it.

Steer clear of Tactical Gamer, and other servers that require hard-core players (Hardcore is a server name, it's fine to join if you're new ^^).

Stick with rifleman, and don't jump straight into assets. Start a local (DEPLOYMENT) server if you want to try out assets. Co-op tends to be different in the terms of air assets ;)

Thanks. I tried it in co-op with some friends before buying BF2 (which I dont think I will play a lot, it's too UT-ish).

I disagree. Unless Tactical Gamers has changed a lot since I played on it regularly, it's actually one of the best servers for learning the ropes on because all the dodgy tactics that absolutely slaughter newbies are frowned upon, as are most anti-social behaviours, as a few tempbans I got there attest to.

Weapons handle differently in Co-op, just so you know, the tickrate is different to that of a real online server, so broadly you'll find them more accurate. Anyway, find some good euro-servers and be open and honest with your squad leaders about the fact that you're new. Do as they say, ask questions as you need to and generally gravitate towards line infantry squads until you have a good grip of what's going on.

Thank you.
I've played some yesterday, and it's a really good mod, just a bit difficult now.
Other, if I'd like to show this to afriend online, he cant join the same server with my serial key, right?

No. But if you want to show it to somebody, there are a lot of gameplay movies on youtube (most of them are still from the old version though), or if you have xfire you can use the broadcast feature to let your friends watch as you play, live.

As others have said, stick to a regular rifleman kit until you have a better understanding of the mod and tell your squadleader you are new when joining a squad. Don't be afraid to ask questions in-game (use squad or team chat) or here on the forums, most of us are nice guys and are happy to help new players.

I too am new, and bought BF 2 just for this mod.

However I am quite frankly at a loss on a lot of issues. And yes I have read the PDF guide.

While it was helpful, there are a lot of unanswered questions with regard to leadership roles / abilities that I have not found answers to.

For instance:

I started a game with just me and the bots, to get used to the whole move / fighting thing, controls etc. Pretty straight forward. But when I tried to "build" structures I could not find, a good how to for deploying structures. I "guessed" that you had to be

1) a squad leader
2) a officer (I was able to call in a different kit)

but when I wanted to build a fox hole, or anti air or something big, I never had the option ("T"?) to select it. Reading the guide tells me I needed to equip the entrenching tool (at least is what I thought it said) and be close to (200m) from a crate or apc. I'm sure its just a learning curve thing but I sure couldn't find a) what I needed to be to do it b) a how to menu.

Can someone walk me through the requirements to build something and the menus / screens / roles I need to have / be at to do this?

I also would like to join / find a "learning server" geared to complete noobs that people would not mind answering "dumb questions".

thx in advance

You need to be squadleader and officer indeed.

Then, select the radio in your inventory, go near two supply crates, aim at an open place where an object would fit (right click), and chose to build a forward outpost via the T-command-rose. Other things can be built close to a forward outpost later.

Then, to actually create the outpost (and other objects), you need the shovel. The officer kit does not have a shovel - this is the duty of the squad members. Since the bots are too stupid for it, you'll have to go to the crates and request a rifleman kit. Then start digging until the forward outpost is up, get back to the officer kit (it should still be lying near the crates), and build other structures.

Do until familiar with the system :)

Note: In singleplayer, I think digging is not needed. Create a LAN multiplayer server instead - you'll be all alone, but for building FOBs, that's a good place.

Another thing: The supply crates that you need can be delivered with supply trucks. Take one of those, drop both crates, and you can start building :)

Like this basically (excuse the german menu and horrible quality, but it gets the point across I hope :p ): http://de.xfire.com/video/38a0c0/

As a squad leader equip your radio, right click then T.

I'm pretty sure you don't have to shovel in co-op, deployed things just appear fully built. Unless they changed it for .95.

Akela looks like you mixed up a couple of things from the manual.
You can build a forward outpost within 50m of a friendly supply crate (dropped by trucks and choppers) and you can build additional structures within a 200m radius of a forward outpost if you have at least 2 crates.

In deployement mode (as in not co-op) deployed stuff takes some time to build by shoveling, you can tell it's ready when you can't shovel it anymore. Also the more people shoveling, the faster it will be built.

To shovel, equip your entrenching tool (fancy name for a shovel) and while being close to the deployable object keep your primary fire button pressed. If you did it right, you'll see the shoveling animation. If you stop digging before the object is complete, it might collapse damaging nearby players.

That's what I said, yes :p

Also, what Bufl4x said.

0.957 will be my first incarnation of PR too! Already joined a couple of servers but my ping rate has been insanely high because we're just getting our internet connection sorted out, but it was really good last night, i got into an insurgency match as taliban and really enjoyed it!

I told them first out that i was a newbie looking for a bit of experience and they helped me out no problem! The only thing is really to stick with the SL and try and keep up with what's happening.

Are there any other UK servers that i could join? every time i look now the MERK and NWA ones are usually full or have reserved slots?

Sure. Tactics & Teamwork and UK Warfare for example. Just sort the list by population :)

It's normal for servers to be full so soon after the release of a new version. I suggest you try the autodeploy feature. Set the max number of players (64 - reserved slots) and be patient, you'll get in eventually.

well, i got closer to my goal, i managed to start a game with a supply truck, muddle thru dropping crate.

I then called for and received a FO, and there i was hung
I changed kits to a shovel rifleman, equipped shovel, and tried left / right clicking...nothing

when I hit T and selected build, it would just say "repairs needed at this position" but no dig animation, nor anything else....

im stumped.

Maybe if I just built a giant wooden badger....;p
