[Help] Getting started

Post by Haji with a Handgun »

I've been wanting to get into texturing/modeling for a while now, and I have no clue where to start really. I've read some tutorials, researched it a bit, but still am pretty lost on this subject. The only thing I really know about it is that I'm going to need 3DSMAX and Maya.

So, pointers? help? reference? tutorials?

I want to learn how to model, and maybe texture. I've been a tester for a mod for Men of War, and I want to contribute some models and such to it. I want learn the basics of modeling things like weapons and statics for BF2.
I don't have a specific project, I just need to learn the skills. My goal is to be able to contribute to the games that I enjoy. What I was trying to do was figure out how to model a basic pistol, and all the tutorials and such I read made no sense.

Try these:
Creating a Weapon for Source tutorial - Mod DB - A glock modelling tutorial + texturing.
Beretta 9000 Video Tutorial - Mod DB - A beretta modelling tutorial + smoothing.

A good tutorial to get started on modelling from the beginning till the end is this, modelling a glock (though you can ignore the backfaces part when modelling for Bf2/PR). It uses 3ds Max, which would be recommended when modelling for PR (3ds max 9 more specifically).

Another one's this, modelling a Beretta 9000, though it's a bit harder than the glock, since it's got alot more curves etc.

You don't really need Maya for anything (as far as i know). Concerning texturing, i don't know much about that, but there's a tutorial following the glock one where it goes through uv-ing and texturing it. I especially recommend the UV part.

Good luck!

Edit: ninja'd :(
