Bring back the old soundtrack!

Post by Nibbit »

Let me get 1 thing straight, I know the current music has been hard work and I really respect the composer(s) of it. (Scott Tobin I believe?) His music is really good but....

I really do miss the old soundtracks, its what I associated PR with, ive been playing this mod from the very start (first mod to come out for bf2! gulf of oman awesomeness!) but I really really REALLY miss the old soundtracks, like:

YouTube - Project Reality OST - Heavy Resistance !!!!!!!!! (best soundtrack for PR ever imo)
YouTube - Al Basrah Theme - Project Reality

so is there any way these tracks could be re-implemented somehow? or mayb a patch for ppl who like the old soundtracks? (im not into programming so I dont know if thats a stupid proposal or not :P )

also listening to these and others brought back so many memories, its been 5 years of my life, 5 very nice years :) and I am very grateful to the whole community and team behind PR that I could experience PR :)

ps

I also miss muttrah v1 epic LB insertions :P
and Zhangjjiang Security Area (best map ever made)
and helmand
and steel thunder

The old Al Basrah track is an Aphex Twin song I think, so it's easy to understand why it was removed.

Is "Heavy Resistance" still in the game? It's my favorite PR song.

You can change the level music without being kicked, but sadly it's limited to whatever music is included in the common_client.zip. What I mean is you can't change it back to say the 0.7 soundtrack, because PB would detect a mismatch and kick you for it, but you can change it to another music track that is still in PR. In this example I said in another thread, I explained how to change kashans music to the old one in 0.8, as the same music file is used in the current al basrah.
'Andy[EEF wrote:;1320228']

To alter a levels loading music without being kicked, go into C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\levels , then into the map folder which you want to change the music for. Open the "info" folder and find "levelname.desc"

For an example, opening kashan's "kashan_desert.desc" looks like this:
<map gsid="5055">
<name> Kashan Desert </name>
<briefing locid="MAPDESCRIPTION_kashan_desert">map description for modders maps not localized (english only)</briefing>
<music> common/sound/menu/music/map7.ogg </music>
<modes>

The text in bold is what you want to be changing to alter the loading music for that particular level. To change this particular track back to the 0.87 one for example, you should replace "map7.ogg" with "PirateX-Desert_Heat.ogg".

To find out the filenames for different music that can be used, open your common_client.zip in your PR directory, go into sound>menu , and then copy+paste the filename you want into the "levelname.desc" for that level.
And also,

Yes it is :D

All you have to do is change what I described to Alkali-Heavy_Resistance.ogg on whatever map you want it in and it should work.

Thanks, I'll definately use the old Bi Ming theme for Quinling.

+1 vege, I know the overall quality of the new tunes are much better.

But the era around 0.7 and 0.85 had the best tracks I ever heard for a game.
I have music turned off now, I NEVER did back then.

The one you posted is my absolute favourite. It captures the spirit of PR: the slow intensity, the seriousness and the awesomeness.

Yeah, I can agree with this. As nice as some of the new soundtrack can be, it can get repetitive very fast. Whenever I hear the Israel/Hamas battle theme I visibly cringe. I appreciate the effort put in, but I just wish it was possible to add a bit more diversity to the music.

That said, I'm willing to bet there is never going to be a regression back to the older stuff. The musician put in effort, and I doubt staff are going to risk losing an asset by tossing his work. The best we can really hope for is a gradual superceding

I myself like the new main menu music "Home". Since most people only HEAR the music, they don't LISTEN to it( I believe so). I would consider PR soundtrack like elevator music when playing PR but I also have downloaded the soundtrack and really LISTENED it and it was damn good.

I like all the soundtracks, but I think that v.8's main menu music is the best, then comes the good old .5 :P , but over all the whole soundtrack itself is very good.

New one is the best, older are sentimental though, so it's obvious people will like music it reminds about their beginnings. :D

Is manually changing them going to cause a pb kick?

I prefer the new music over the old (with the exception of a few tracks), but as said the older ones have some 'nostalgic' value to them now, besides, the 0.5 and onwards menu theme is simply great. :)
