if he doesnt get caught and imprisoned for desertion first (depending on what army he works for.) He would receive some type of punishment for the theft and for violating his orders, and only if he wasn't shot by an enemy while he was on his mission to go find and engage random enemies far away from his post.

If some unknown guy is charged with leading a squad of men and upon their first mission, he grabs a barret .50cal, Says "See ya" , walks towards the combat zone, and doesnt look back... we'd all think that was badass!
But in PR, its a **** move...
