Medium Textures
Im just wondering why some people have to use medium textures and some dont. For some people, including myself, have to use medium textures or else our game will CTD no matter what. Is this a bug that the Dev's dont know how to fix yet? I cant understand why this is...
I have a pretty beastly gaming rig i built myself, and it really pisses me off that i have to play this amazing mod with such crappy textures, and yes, medium and high DOES make a big difference in visual quality.

Re: Medium Textures
If you crash from being on high textures, the problem is simply your PC doesn't have enough memory to load all the textures on high.
Now many people will say "My PC has a sh*t load of memory why is it still crashing?". Well, the answer is most likely, other programs are hogging a big chunk of your memory, epically if your on Win7 as that's a huge hogger of memory.
You can still play on High GFX with Win7 thou, you just need the 64bit version and well over 4gbs of ram. Not that the 64bit directly helps BF2, it doesn't, BF2 is still 32bit and can only load upto ~3gbs of ram (even if you have way more than that on your PC) but having 64bit means your system can have more ram in it and other programs can pick off that extra ram, although some people might be managing it fine with the 32bit version and/or less ram.
Next time you play PR, run the task manager in the background and before you load up, note what your memory usage is before you load up and note the memory usage when you crash.
We are always optimizing the mod as much as we can but its a very slow process.

Re: Medium Textures
Cool, thanks for the fast reply. Makes sense. I figured 4gb of ram would be more than enough for this, i guess i was wrong. if i were to turn other settings down would that allow me to use High textures again?
This is my setup.
AMD Phenom II X4
4Gb OCZ High Performance Titanium
Radeon Hd 4870
Windows 7 (32)
Corsair TX 650 PSU
I know its not AMAZING, but i figured it owuld be like 5x more than enough to run this mod on max settings lol. i also play with 8x AA and a resolution of 1440x900

Re: Medium Textures
Textures is the biggest memory eater out there, there isn't really anything else settings wise you can change to reduce it. My best advice would be to close down as many unneeded programs as possible before loading up PR, also a fresh restart before playing always helps.

Re: Medium Textures
Bolded parts are your problem. 32bit OS systems have a max addressable memory limit of 4GiB, and since your graphics card has 512-1024MB, and you have 4GB of ram, you've probably only got around 3.2-3.5GB addressable memory for BF2.Elem3nt0 wrote:Cool, thanks for the fast reply. PR (+ background stuff) uses, on average, 53% (Logitech G15 with Perf Mon on while playing) of my 6GB of ram. This means it's using ~3.2GB of memory while playing. That would be a likely scenario that BF2 would no longer be able to address new memory and thus CTD.
I bet if you switched your Win7 to the 64bit variant (the product keys are interchangeable between 64/32bit) that you'd be able to play with high textures.

Re: Medium Textures
Thats what i dont get though, i dont keep any processes open except the few mandatory ones. Everything else is closed.
aticlxx.exe
CCC.exe
csrss.exe
dthtml.exe
dwm.exe
explorer.exe
GrooveMonitor.exe (whatever the hell that is, only uses 600-700K though)
HookManager.exe (dont know what that is either. 148K)
jusched.exe
MOM.exe
plugin-container.exe
RTHDVCPL.exe
sidebar.exe (any idea what that is?)
taskmgr.exe
winlogon.exe
Thats all i ever keep open. I dont figure any of those are safe to close so i never close them.
@Psyrus
Well damn that sucks. I dont have access to a 64 bit version lol

You don't really need well over 4gb to use this mod on high, 4gb is enough (if you use a 64-bit system)'[R-DEV wrote:Rhino;1486900']You can still play on High GFX with Win7 thou, you just need the 64bit version and well over 4gbs of ram.
Edit: Did some googling for you
sidebar.exe - windows gadgets
GrooveMonitor.exe - something related to windows office
jusched.exe - Java Update checker
plugin-container.exe - mozilla plugins (like flash)

Re: Medium Textures
Interestingly my comp with a 32bit WinXP and 3GB of memory was able to run PR everything on High until the BF2 1.5 patch came out. Since then I've had to keep the lighting (CTD's certain maps, like Silent Eagle and Dragonfly everytime) and textures (CTD's after several maps played) on medium for the mod to be playable, and still it manages the occasional memory allocation error, which I never had before.

I dont use Win7 so I can't really help you too much (I use WinXP x64) but how much of your ram is used just by that?
Well was a bit of an exaggeration but you need at least 5gbs.pfhatoa wrote:You don't really need well over 4gb to use this mod on high, 4gb is enough (if you use a 64-bit system)

I have never seen my ram @ or even close to 80% while playing PR (with 6GB of ram), is it a momentary spike to 5gb or was that number from a certain orifice?[R-DEV]Rhino wrote:Well was a bit of an exaggeration but you need at least 5gbs.

You might be fine with 4GB on win7, I can't speak from experience but to play it safe, I would have as much over 4gb as you can get.

@Psyrus
Ah thanks for that googling, much appreciated.
Physical Memory (MB)
Total 3327
Cached 1855
Available 2743
Free 910
This might change once i restart though.

See there you have it, you've effectively lost access to ~700MB of your memory by using the crippling x86 version of windows 7.Elem3nt0 wrote:Right now with firefox open, my memory usage is around 18%

Yeah i just noticed that myself. Idk why it says that. I have two sticks of the same ram in there. I hope i didnt mess something up....[R-DEV]Rhino wrote:It says you only have 3GBs of RAM there...

Re: Medium Textures
How about on Windows XP 32 bit? Will it CTD on high textures with:
Intel Pentium D 3.00 GHz
3GB RAM DDR2
Nvidia GeForce 9600GT 512MB up to 1GB DDR3
???
If it wont I'm getting XP ASAP
I cant upgrade my PC at the moment so that's why I'm asking

XP uses less ram overall so you might be able to run it on high with nothing else running in the bg but can't say for sure.

Re: Medium Textures
Now see theres another problem, i wasnt the one to install this version of windows 7, so i dont exactly have a product key for it. I originally had XP, but when i sent my computer off to a friend of mine to have him reformat and upgrade it for me, he installed windows 7 for me aswell. So im probably stuck with this. I could have just gotten his CD key from him, but, he passed away about almost two months ago...Psyrus wrote: Torrent an untouched retail/oem 64bit (whichever is applicable to you) and put your product key in.
Oh and patrick im pretty sure you wont have any problems on XP, i used to play PR all the time on max settings on XP with no problems.

Re: Medium Textures
Since I highly doubt a 9600GT will run PR at maximum settings with >30fps, it's really quite a moot point. Regardless of your OS you'll have to run medium everything.PatrickLA_CA wrote:How about on Windows XP 32 bit? Will it CTD on high textures with:

Nothing to do with windows 7, it's a 32 bit OS limitation. x86 XP, Server 2000/2003/2008, Linux, mac will all have the 4GiB memory limitation.Elem3nt0 wrote:Oh, seems Psyrus has cleared that up lol. DAMNIT, fatass windows 7...![]()

is pentium D dual core, if so yeah you should be able to run in high (no shadows or lighting though) if not you need to play with the settings a bit morePatrickLA_CA wrote:How about on Windows XP 32 bit? Will it CTD on high textures with:

There is only one unforgivable lie That is the lie that says, This is the end, you are the conqueror, you have achieved it and now all that remains is to build walls higher and shelter behind them. Now, the lie says, the world is safe.? The Great Khan.
