Mortars are killing this game for me

Mortars are fine in most things. Ammo, range (except 1 km map, where IMO they shouldn't be allowed, as they are quite heavy asset), firepower, etc. - all are balanced.

One thing is not. The spotter system. When they showed it to us, it seemed as yet another perfect teamwork oriented asset, hell, even calculator menu has text "range and elevation has to be confirmed by spotter" or something like that. The truth is you can spam them without any hesitation and any problem on most places on the map just by constantly putting firemission marker on your head. It is not a problem on 4km map, but it is on smaller especially 1 km. And with 3rd party software this is even more easy.


Disallowing mortars in DoD and more dependence on spotter system would be nice thing to see in future.

Well, from my observations, when .95 first came out, I noticed EVERYONE tried doing mortars, but lately, I've noticed mortars have been used scarcely, and when they are used, they are usually pretty accurate, without tools, from my understanding.

Otherwise, if they annoy you so much, you should go on a mortar hunt, and hope the mortars aren't in the DoD.

my only issue is Mortar squads....rarely anyone calls in Fire Missions because they are to busy with other things so mortar squads tend to just sit there waiting, not doing anything productive.

Mortars have been JUST introduced with this version. I don't think their evolution is complete. I was pleasantly suprised at the simplicity of setting the range for the mortar fire. I read the tuts and watched a vid and though it was going to be more difficult than it is.

I think the "ruined the game and must be nerfd" argument should be looked at from a real life standpoint. Is it realistic they can fire as much and often as they do in game?

I find the mortars more of an annoyance than a threat. If they don't hit you head on they rarely do any damage except blow up any vehicles in the area. to you. Sure you have to retreat and sit inside a building, but the mortars don't penetrate most bulidings so you just have to sit on the other side of any wall.

Using a app/spreadsheet only takes off say 20-30 seconds on doing the maths yourself. You still have to slew the mortar and range it in. The round also has flight time so there is no real insta shooting with the mortars.

Send a forward observer to locate the enemy mortars position. If no visual can be achieved go by sound and call in counter-battery or area attack.

That is not a good enough answer I'm afraid. Using sound alone would take you most of the game to find and destory the motar unless you got extremly lucky. And what to do if it's in the DoD?

Nearly all static objects offer cover from mortar strikes. A lot of the destructible statics still have partial walls you can hide behind. Apcs about? Report it to your team. Call in a bomb car. Request a RPG from the cache. Sneak up on it and RKG it

Another team is going to come running into an open area that has been destroyed my mortar, only to be killed by the same Apc? Dont think so. The only chance you have got is the bomb car but that's a big ask since most of them get killed anyways by the Apc.

Mortars are very good right now. I can't say that there is the problem with constant spam or something , besides i find it pretty cool to be under mortar fire if you have X-Fi and good surround sound system =()

this is what i dont like about the mortars also. i pretty much understand that assets and players get damaged when a mortar hits on top of or close to the most regular buildings within PR. the problem is that the mortar damage goes thru bunker walls also, and thats what i really do not understand about it (plus the fact that you can build working mortars within buildings).

the problem with mortars set in the DoD can easily be solved by good server administration or rules which simply prohibit setting mortars within DoDs or main base areas (e.g. GB main @ Basrah).

Mortars are fine like this.
They're an excellent addition to PR.

To those whining they're ruining gameplay : Adapt.
Remember when the spawn system was modified? Many whined, most adapted, and the latter enjoyed winning the challenge of a harsher gameplay.

PR is not just a typical corridor shooter ; Think.
If you're under fire from and APC, adapt, react by having RPGs and SPGs or even bomb cars to take it out while you're under decent cover. Prevent armor incursions with IEDs in strategic areas. Etc.

Mortars aren't different, just another threat to adapt to.
If mortars are hitting your position, send hunting teams or try to find the mortar-site location then pummel it with your own mortar-site. Most of the times I was a mortarman, we had to relocate because they were bombarding us and we couldn't find their location.
If the enemy mortar site is far away from their main, ambush the logistic line with IEDs.

It's just another aspect of PR, and PR favors the most organized team. You may have lost to a better organized team, thus why you were overwhelmed. I've had rounds where we held caches under mortar fire, constant infantry attacks and APC support, and we succeeded in straining the enemy enough to win. It wasn't a cave, it was a villa in the open and the cache was quite vulnerable.

I think they contribute highly to the atmosphere of warfare and realism in the game.

Whenever I see footage of combat, I see a lot of random explosions going off, and plumes of smoke wisping into the air.

Before mortars, I rarely saw such things, only seeing a few grenades or RPG's or rockets or artillery strikes RARELY go off.

But in real life, people use mortars, and mortars are used to soften up enemy positions before an assault. So too bad, you're experiencing virtually soldiers face in combat.

Since it came out, but this is a new patch now and them statistics count for nothing since there have been many more things added to the game since then.

Might I suggest getting your team to build some mortars and counterbattery? I personally love the mortars, I don't find them unbalanced at all, and I think they greatly improve teamplay. Just yesterday I talked a mortar onto a group of US infantry on Kokan, it reminded me how awesome PR is.

In conclusion, I'd like to say that if they're shooting at you with mortars, shoot back!
