It does now.WarnABro wrote:video link isnt working dude
I take it the snow in the video is edited in? It actually would be nice to see such a thing in the map though, if you can find some decent snow effects. I think it could look better than rain, so worth looking into I guess.
Perhaps the wookie sniper mod has snow? Then at least you can get an idea of how it looks in-game.

The snow in the vid is the common snow effect you can find on the BFeditor forums, been there for a long time. Its good as long as you dont have to many snow flakes as then what happens is you exceed the particle limit.[R-DEV]AfterDune wrote:It does now.

actually, to correct you both, ive made my own snow ambient.[R-DEV]Rhino wrote:The snow in the vid is the common snow effect you can find on the BFeditor forums, been there for a long time. Its good as long as you dont have to many snow flakes as then what happens is you exceed the particle limit.
The one on the forums is a cheap rip from the one in 2142, the snow isnt heavy enough nor is it realistic like mine
the particle limit depends on the random size scale and its emit frequency, if they are roughly even then it shouldnt cause any issues. I did a benchmark test on a couple of peoples systems of different spec to make sure the fps didnt drop dramatically. seems ok with 12 particles. If i was to overlap the triggers on the map, it would be at some cases rendering double the snow, still works fine but for those slowbies, a few metres walk could cause lag in between triggers. 90 percent of us will play it just fine
The peeps who play PR on low because of their system might need to sit this one out.

the map looks realy good and i like the snow prety much. but it doest look like russia or chechnya environment the houses is to shiny best would be to put some old wooden crapy houses with small yards like in arma 2. And the rouds should be dirty with no cement. That is how i imagine it

did you also fix the issue with aircrafts not tirggering the effect (because of high altitude) and vehicles being to fast for the effect (vehicle triggers the effect, but the snow doesnt play for it too well because its moving away from the location where the snow would fall)?

lol...dunem666 wrote:actually, to correct you both, ive made my own snow ambient.
The one on the forums is a cheap rip from the one in 2142,
WOW Mod-The Eagles Nest-Snow map! - Official BF Editor Forums
That topic years ago use to have vids and pics of a snow effect, but have long since been lost. But if you still scroll down you will find code for the snow effect itself.
Note the date of that topic was posted on: Posted 14 January 2006
When was BF2142 released? October 17, 2006
Ie, BF2 has snow effects at least 9 months before 2142 was released, but if you look back further I'm sure you can find others.
The BF2142 snow effect is totally different from how BF2 effects work since it has its own unique "weather system" and as such, you can't even have a "cheap rip from the one in 2142".
I will grant you that you might have edited someone elses snow effect code to improve it, but claiming you made it is not a good move.

Re: [Map] Barentz Offensive - 2KM w/snow (Event Preview)
cool, a few things thou

What's with the "black" snow flakes?

What's with the burning logs? If an industrial plant was burning anything it would most likely be coal, oil or gas

lol, that looks like the snow roof texture I made years ago, looks really bad...

really need to make your trenches and other objects more snowy. For starters you should give your trench terrain texture a snow colour, and then put snow on the wood texture as well. Also the camo net in the bg could be white.

Re: [Map] Barentz Offensive - 2KM w/snow (Event Preview)
black snowflakes appear in shaded areas from the sun, only the normal particles tho, the random ones dont want to change colour, when in game its actually a nice effect as thou its getting in your eyes, ive made it stick also on certain particles and looks like a flakes on a camera lens with prbot.
as for logs the logs are being burned to keep warm by, i dunno, if theres some coal static i can use more than happy to swap it, it could even be left over wood cuts. It is infact a boiler, which needs to be heated by fire but was nothing else to burninate
i made the roof texture, looks too glossy from distance, up close its detail transparent snow flakes looks pretty nice.
I know im gonna get crits all time but i dont think picking on a bunch of logs in a fire is anything compared to missing walls and holes on standard pr maps
especially when i just did a 12 hour stint on mapping
my eyes and back hurts
ill report back in half a day lol

snow flakes being really far away falling in the sky that are black look pretty rubbish.... I would really get rid of them...dunem666 wrote:black snowflakes appear in shaded areas from the sun, only the normal particles tho, the random ones dont want to change colour, when in game its actually a nice effect as thou its getting in your eyes, ive made it stick also on certain particles and looks like a flakes on a camera lens with prbot.
If someone wants to keep warm they dont burn logs in an industrial firedunem666 wrote:as for logs the logs are being burned to keep warm by, i dunno, if theres some coal static i can use more than happy to swap it, it could even be left over wood cuts. here are some snow textures I made years ago for a BGF project that got scrapped, as well as the snow texture for the commander bunker, you might find them useful.dunem666 wrote:i made the roof texture, looks too glossy from distance, up close its detail transparent snow flakes looks pretty nice.

I didn't review maps like Iron Eagle, I stopped reviewing maps for PR as one of my "jobs" once I went back to the normal dev position, one of the main reason why I went back is because I didn't want to spend all my time reviewing maps like I was and wanted to put my time into my own work. Its the job of the Lead Mappers to make sure these bugs dont get into PR but they have been away so quite a few slipped though. the Lulworth LAN was the first time I even tried the .95 beta and I think everyone else there can confirm how much I was cringing when we played Iron Eagle and then I had to hold up the squad to take some screenshots of the bugs etc
If you dont want my feedback that's fine by me

I like the atmosphere in your map. Almost feel chilly as well
.
The dark snowflakes look a bit odd, perhaps they can be a bit whiter, if possible. Other than that, I like what I see.

Re: [Map] Barentz Offensive - 2KM w/snow (Event Preview)
I cant get rid of the natural shadows on the snowflakes, besides i dont want to, most people say it looks realistic. The pic with them on is backed up against a mountain. If you check a video of someone skiing for example, the closer flakes are blurred from vision giving a darker effect, I will try and lighten them up tho. Also getting snow flakes on a camera lens also renders black.
Its an insustrial fire with purpose of its a water boiler hence the object name rus_industrial_boiler. thats why it has pipes from the top which i havent connected yet. who cares they are burning wood??!? cmon man dont you think your being a little petty.
the link below is a ref of a water boiler, but smaller and more modern.... burning logs. If your a mapper that spends time on detail, you should know coal is no where sufficient with combustion to boil water nor its is reliable in cold snow/wet/damp conditions. maybe cook a bbq!

sorry for arguing back but id rather stand my case on this one with the logs.
I do actualy really appreciate the crits and i dont mind them, I just think that its a little out of hand if im doing this for the community xmas event. Il admit some of it has been rushed only for xmas and will have more scrutiny at later dates. My testers and clan members whom have played pr for years also, they give me honest opinions that it looks more realistic that the average PR map and its by far more than sufficient to hold event on.
I think Iron ealge is a great map, yes it does have faults. Have you not considered fixing the faults in muttrah tho? There are unrealistic faults and walls sticking thru each other at gas station, have been there since 0857 looks really bad and un realistic, i mean if it was irl, the neighbours wud be pretty upset.
As i said i do really appreciate the crits, but try and give some more contructive critisism that your not gonna get corrected on. I understand you have been doing this for years now, and you proudly wear your tags for doing so.
People complained about my "straight aligned palmtrees" on baghdad, on comparision with ref pix, its was amazingly similar down to the nearest tree. I just dont get how people can crit without checking it first.
The average player will not spot any faults in maps such as Iron eagle, they have better things to do like kill people than stop and take pics of faults. Thats just you and me as I am the same with bug finding.
Id like to politely point out, I worked for a game development company for 7 years in AMCP Control. You guys working on PR have nothing to worry about compared to bugs and quality in maps from brand new games even today. If you didnt know, check the credits for Quake Live
Just before I left the company due to illness.
My oh my, the bugs in BF2 nilla maps are untrue. It still went out in the shops. Fail AMCP control.
Thanks for the textures, i agree they look really bad. is this why they were scrapped? The roof tile texture is nothing like mine, You cant even distiquish the tiles under the snow and it looks like white sand has been dropped on it. With the opinion of my Artistic Partner, it looks like gravel.
I will infact use some textures tho, Im a little concerned about my vehicle textures. You see, I own a pair of snowchains for my 4x4, I know how they work and how to put them on, Im gutted I was even told i had done them wrong. I admit the texture was **** and has been updated with 'real chain' textures from my actual snowchains.
Sorry about rant, can u tell im protective of my work? haha
