crash after 2 min of gameplay

Post by Scared_420 »

I've been playing this game for a long time and I've never had a problem like this before. What happens is after I join a game I start running around for 1-2 minutes and then I get squiggly lines down the screen and the game freezes up completely, it also makes a weird humming noise. The only way to get out of it is to manually shut off the computer. Computer is intel dual core, nvidia 8800 and 4 gigs of ram. I have everything on high except for textures as that seemd to cause a problem sometimes. I tried turning all the setting to medium and low as well as deleting the cache folder and it still happens. I'm using windows 7, 64 bit. I'm thinking it could be the video card failing or the power supply. Any idea would be appreciated.

P.S. It happened the first time on Wanda Shan, it was rubber banding at first then just died, I thought maybe the map was too intense for the computer so after I rebooted I put on a smaller map and it still happened.

As you already guessed, this is most likely a hardware fault.
There is a possibility that not the card itself is broken yet.
To avoid further damage to your system refrain from using resource demanding applications.

The first thing you want to do is check for temperatures. Its is quite possible that instead of your card dying of old age (ofcourse still a possiblity) it actually just overheats. Overheating can be cause by clogged fans.
So open the case and check for dust, give it a nice cleaning.

If, after you have done this and checked that the temps while running the game are ok but it still happens it might really be some piece of hardware dying (gfx card is most likely in this case).

There is another (not so probable) chance that your gfx drivers have become corrupted. Wiping and reinstalling them might solve the issue as well.

I have the same problem. So I just reinstalled windows, Bf2 and Pr.

I have no problem with playing Counter strike, Starcraft2 or Supreme commander.

If it was a hardware-fault wouldn't my computer crash in those games as well??

Mads Say Thanks

Here is how I see it:
Each game stresses the PC in different ways. PR/BF2 not being very well optimized compared to newer games for example uses the CPU alot more. PR is a space hog and will try to use up ALL your ram ;) .
As your other games are happy with just the perfectly fine working hardware sections PR might grow into those that are faulty, or exaggerate a single component and triggering the crash.

There are tools that will stress or test certain components. I find it easiest to test the RAM first (Windows Memory Diagnostic, MemTest etc.).
