Cool and Quiet fan for my AMD?

Post by hiberNative »

god, my stock cpu fan is so loud, i really need a new one.

CPU: AMD Phenom2 X4 965 3,4GHz Black Edition
Mobo: MSI 870A-G54 AM3

on load it sounds like a food mixer, it really is ridiculous and i'm a bit pissed that they get away with this. right now i have a small table fan blowing into the case while gaming to keep the noise down.
did cpu temp and the temperature is around 50?C on load so it's ok. but the sound.

so i'm basically looking for a nice fan with heatsink to cool it down. i've seen references to these so i'm throwing them out there:

Komplett.se - Zalman CNPS9900NT CPU Kylare

Komplett.se - Noctua NH-D14 CPU Kylare

second one seems a bit overkill perhaps? i dunno. i know i want one with a fan (4 pin), not a passive one. recommendations appreciated.

If your temperatures fine then you don't need to bother with a whole new heatsink, just get a quieter fan. I assume you can fit a 120mm on it, so I would suggest a Scythe Gentle Typhoon, it's very quiet and high performance. It's likely it will even reduce your temps even more. There are 3 versions of that fan, AP-13, AP-14, and AP-15. The one in the link is the AP-14. The 13 is slower and quieter while the 15 is faster but louder, the 14 is in the middle.

i'm not sure that will be able to attach to my heatsink? the current one clips on in the fan slot of the heatsink, the standard way. with a bigger one, there's nothing to mount it on, and i don't think it'll be able to "suck out" a concentrated flow of air like a designated one would.

What size is your fan? Also is it facing the cpu or is it perpendicular?

Cool and quiet is useless. It would overheat my CPU to 90c and do a auto-shutdown. And confuse when I am in-game doing a processor intensive task with idle. Randomly ingame it would reduce my clock speed to 1600mhz from 2700mhz

Heh, been there done that, yep, that processor fan is a jet engine defined.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev.2 - Inet.se <- This one is the one I got for the exact same reason (and same processor). Works like a charm, virtually inaudible, cool and cheap (700kr is a bit much for a processor fan imo).

So unless you're in for some overclocking this one would do the job perfectly well.

Oooh, and when you're done, attach the old fan to a adjustable voltage source (such as one of those "cubes" you got to fiddle around with during physics class) and steadily up the voltage untill you burn that sucker.

That's what I usually do with all my old fans :)

I am asuming you are refering to this AMD technology: Cool'n'Quiet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I doubt thats what the OP meant. xD

BTW: I got a Scythe Mugen and am quite content with it. (should fit your socket too I think)
So Scythe is what I heard is the way to go.
As second Brand I like Zalman. Not sure how BeQuiet is these days but back a few years ago they had some good stuff.

H70 - Its ?89.99 in british money. But worth every penny.

Edit - Why does it put a Question Mark down when I put a Pound sign?

thanks for the replies. if i can't find a decentrly zalman i'll probably get the arctic cooling freezer. i really respect zalman since using their 120mm's for extended periods.

That's funny, I've got the same cpu, and my stock fan is fine, the system actually is fairly quiet overall....on an ASUS mobo, M4A88TD-M....maybe the "cool-and-quiet-technology-thingie" on it? I'm also NOT overclocking it at all, just native speeds/values...

I would be seriously concerned if your stock fan is very noisy. Check if the headsink is properly seated on the card, as it could be working hard due to overheating? Are you sure the temp is 50 deg? Is that measured, or is that from the monitor/bios? So long as the heatsink isn't -really- hot you should be ok.

Did you use the stock compound, or apply your own?

If it sounds like a powerdrill, perhaps the fan is seriously on its way out.

AC are always a good buy and are relatively small for the performance. Coolermaster also do a nice range of high performance fans. My recommendation would be to buy a heatsink and then buy your choice of fans to go with it, so you can have exactly the performance or queit you want. Nothing better than some Scythe fans on push pull on demanding systems or dialed-down to slow speed for quiet ones.
