IED detonator and Binos suggestion

Post by charliegrs »

Im not even sure if this is possible with the BF2 engine, but heres my suggestion anyway...

Right now, if you put down an IED and then run off to a hiding spot to watch it with your binoculars you have somewhat of a problem. The time it takes to switch from the binos to your IED detonator allows enough time for the vehicle you are trying to kill to get out of harms way. Trust me I know, Ive tried it many times. The only time I can do it is if I get a good enough vantage point to see the vehicle coming from far enough away to give me time to switch to the detonator. This usually means my hiding spot has to be close enough to the IED to see it without binos, and while Im good at finding effective hiding spots, it always seem like somehow I get discovered.

I would imagine in real life, you would be able to hold the binos to your eyes with one hand, and the detonator in your other hand ready to trigger it the moment a vehicle drives over it. So how could this be done in PR? Perhaps giving the binos a "secondary attack" (which I think with binos would actually be the left mouse button since the right button is used to sight in the binos) this secondary attack would trigger the IED. So basically you would be off in the distance watching the IED with your binos, and when something drives over it you hit the secondary attack button and set it off. No need to switch, no delay. I dont think its unrealistic. Not only that but no new animations or models or anything would have to be made, since you wont actually "see" the detonator, because your looking through your binos.

However I have a feeling theres some sort of BF2 engine limitation that wont allow this.

maybe, if you can attack a "scope" to the detonator, and in the model for the IED change it so you have the detonator in one hand, and the bincos in the other.

then when you hit LMB you are firing your gun (blowing the IED) and RMD is like looking into the sniper scope (binocs).

if its possible to do something like that, maybe.

I guess they could also connect the IED to the binocs, but idk how that would work (kinda like how grenades, thrown and nade traps use the same nades) I think it might be difficult, but might be possible..

Personally i like the idea, just of course a delay where when you hit LMB you kinda look down and press the button kinda animation... for some sort of delay.

I like your first idea. It sounds more do-able. You lay an IED, then you automatically switch to the detonator, find cover, and then hit the RMB to use the "scope" of the detonator, which Im sure can be made to look like binos. Now you have a magnified view of the IED and you can stay out of harms way while you wait for something to drive over it. When it does, you hit the LMB and boom. Sounds good.

This is actually a good suggestion. But the IED guy would need to have the binocs in his kit.

Get a buddy to spot it for you.

giving the detonator to the binoculars is not really possible but the other way round, giving binoculars to the detonate may be possible, although it has its possible complications that I can see which may stop it from working, as right now, right click for the detonator is to switch from the detonate back to dropping IEDs on the ground (providing you have some reloaded) and replacing that with "scoping in" with the binoculars may prove a bit of a problem.

I'm pretty sure that they already do?

This is the reason I stopped using IED's, I always get spotted no matter where I hide.

This seems like the perfect suggestion really.

He already does. How else would I know about the massive delay between switching from binos to the detonator? lol.

imho there is a very easy and universal way to this "omg i cant kill the whole enemy team on my own" problems, its called teamwork... try to use a spotter or even a civillian spotter, i tried it and it works ;)

IRL arent IED operators not too far away? besides i have no problem like this, i simply put the ied down, if im SL ill put a marker on it, i generally put my IED's in noteable places eg beside a wreck or on a bridge. i withdraw 100 metres or so and just wait.
Got 20 kills doing this yesterday with artillery IEDs :D

Im not sure how laying an IED on a road and waiting for something to drive over it (which can take a long time depending on how heavily trafficed the area is) equates to trying to kill the whole enemy team on your own. Would using a spotter work well? Sure. Its most likely done in real life, and Im sure many insurgents work alone as well. However, in PR, its pretty hard to get a teammate to do something as boring as watching an IED. The real dedicated players may be ok with it, but on public servers most people are trying to have fun and dont consider something like watching an IED very fun. My suggestion is simply a way to enhance the effectiveness of the Sapper kit, and maybe more people might use it for this purpose. Since as it is right now, I dont often see people laying IEDs and watching them. It probably has to do with the waiting factor but that never bothers me because its incredibly satisfying to blow up a vehicle full of troops. But I think Im in the minority.

Place the IED next to a landmark or visual reference you can see from far away, then get yourself on a rooftop or something and watch the spot till something drives over/passed..

Must say though that you can see a vehicle coming in "from miles away" in game so you should have more then enough time to switch back to the detonator in the first place but whenever I decide to mine or IED some road I make sure I got one mate with an ammo bag to reload from, he would also be the spotter with binocs.

I use IEDs alot (favorite weapon) and i dont have this problems... a vecicle is easy to see, you no need binoculars to check it... For infantry no problem too... Ask a squad member play as Civi and say you to blow the IED

I feel like this reminds me of COD

Maybe if someone could add a double tap feature on a key it could work maybe?

Oh I do use landmarks, thats pretty much the only way I can tell where my IED is from a distance. However from a far distance I may be able to see the approaching vehicle, but I might not be able to tell if hes on the road, or off the road, or took an adjacent road you know what I mean? Ive missed some good IED strikes because of this. Which means Ive had to get alot closer.

And your second comment is very much dependent on where you put your IED. Some of my favorite spots (I have alot) dont give you much warning until the vehicle is right on top of the bomb. Sometimes the combination of a real good IED spot, coupled with a real good hiding spot, leave you with not much visibility of where your IED is. Binos would really help in this situation if the good hiding spot is pretty far from the IED.
