@rudy_eila: What resolution do you run at? Get in a tank, shoot an HE shell at the ground right in front of you then immediately drive into the cloud, then tell me how you do. (Just a note, dust clouds are literally the only time I lag so if I was willing to deal with some lag during those times I would turn my AA up to 8x, the thing is that I much prefer no lag in tight situations like that than the small visual gain from 2x more AA since the difference from 4x to 8x is unnoticeable during proper game play.)

@MC.Lu: I'm not sure if that's been fixed in game, but you can change the resolution in your .exe file's properties manually.

@Okita: Check your drivers and make sure they are up to date. Do you run other programs at the same time as when you're gaming?
I have Win7 x64-bit as well so that shouldn't be the problem here.

im running the saphire 5870 with 6gb ddr3 ram and a i7 950 procesor the card is great the only problem i can see is your ram might be causing a bottleneck

That's a possibility uglymud, and if that is what is causing the problem here it could be easily fixed with a program like Gamebooster to prevent unnecessary use of RAM by keeping some background processes from running.

Hey guys.

As the title states, I have noticed that the majority of you guys play on high,
It seems when i play on high, i get pretty good FPS, but once I enter a town,
such as iron eagle, or fullajah west, it gets pretty bad, its still playable but the
FPS drop is major, Im using a ATI Radeon 5870 GPU and I have 4gb worth of RAM.
What about you guys? Get bad FPS etc?

I've heard many people here ask you what your CPU is but you haven't said from what I can see?

I'm guessing that its most likely a problem with your CPU. It most likely cant cope with feeding all the draw calls from the game to your GPU when there are lots of different objects to draw all at the same time, like in a city and as such, your GPU isn't getting fed all the info that otherwise it could probably process fast enough, if it knew what to process soon enough

ah rgr, missed that one, ye probably the problem, even thou its 64bit and a quad core, AMD CPUs are not that good with processing raw data (main reason why I have an Intel CPU for LMing, shit load of raw data to process there ) and as BF2 is only a 32 bit game, and doesn't support multiple CPUs, its only using a fraction of what your CPU is capable of and as such, that is most likely your bottle neck.

The processor speed is indeed a bottleneck for that graphics card. However saying that AMD CPUs aren't as good for data processing as Intel CPUs are goes a bit far. It's true for the older CPUs, such as the Phenom I series, but the Phenom II series are on par, and sometimes even better than their Intel counterparts (just look up the benches between the X6 1090T and a i7-950 for example).

In this case though, it's merely a case of the CPU not being fast enough to process the data coming from your GPU. If you know how, I'd suggest you try raising the multiplier of your CPU with 2 or 3. Since it's a Black Edition CPU you have, the multiplier of it is unlocked. This will raise your CPU speed to near 3.0GHz, and things will already run smoother.

Do keep an eye on the temperatures though. I don't know how good the stock cooler on that thing is

GTX260 (old one, not the Core216)
4GB DDR2 RAM @ 1000MHz (so it runs 1:1 with my FSB)
Resolution: 1680*1050
Settings: High + 8x AA
Sound: Software (hardware causes compatibility issue when using TS/Mumble, for some reason) + High + EAX enabled.


FPS values are between 135 (even in cities, if there's no movement) and 55-ish in heavy smoke + heavy fighting (in a city, of course).

I totally agree with the OP, I have the following rig

E6600 running at 3.2 Ghz (core 2 duo)
4 GB RAM
AMD HD 6870
Windows 7 64 bit

running at 1920 x 1080 high settings anti aliasing off.

Ok so in normal conditions my FPS is ok above between 50 and 100

but in some maps, where are there heavy statics involved like muttrah city, within the city itself my FPS goes down to 20

and on fallujah west my FPS has gone down to as low as 17
on the new map burning sands, again within the city, massive FPS drop


I find that alot of people say one thing but dont provide real evidence, they say they get 100 FPS all over, but are they really measuring with FRAPS, are they testing in the hardcore areas..

lol so many amateurs who cannot provide real facts...

well guys, im on windows 7 home 64 bit, and im not on aerothemes, its off.
And i just set my CCC to run with game default. And I get really bad FPS when in maps with lots of buildings,
such as fullajah for instance. I have set my AA to like X2 in game, and its real bad. Any idea how do i get rid of this bad FPS? it really affects me at CQC

I wouldn't worry about if I was you, I have a very high end computer and I to get bad fps in built up areas. I get drops to about 40FPS sometimes when I am in built up areas. I think some people who have posted here are reading their FPS wrong, I cannot see anyone getting a constant 100 FPS in these areas without any drops. I don't know of anyone in my clan who doesn't get these drops and they all have high end computers aswell.

I have used fraps to test my Fps, but isnt this what some of you guys are using?

the performance drop in muttrah for me , is still playable but I always have FRAPS on so am always measuring my FPS, I have had rigs in the past with dual 7900 GTX and also a 260 GTX and now a hd 6870, and it seems always in high static areas my FPS come right down, like I said muttrah is not so bad even at 20 FPS is still playable but I would prefer a minimum of 30,

maps like Kokan, burning sands and fallujah west, city area FPS drops to below 20 and is quite annoying..

can I request that people state what resolution they are playing in and graphics details level and also use FRAPS to measure their FPS in the built up areas.. can I post screen shots~? or am I still too new?

It really annoys me when some dweeb states states they get really high Fps like 100 in all areas, are you playing at reallly low resolutions.. please provide more details and real facts..

Maybe it is my processor, but surely a e6600 clocked at 3.2 Ghz is fast enough to provide the graphics card with enough raw data?

Well thanks alot for the great help guys, it seems that it rounds down to 2 things, its either my RAM or my Processor thats bottlenecking my CPU. Maybe its even both, i guess i could try a gamebooster program, well yeah i could try it, i mean its no harm done. If you guys know of any trustworthy programs, could you guys gimme a link and how to actually use them? I have never used it before, if this actually helps me FPS in built up areas, it would be a great substitute till i actually get a new motherboard and processor and RAM.

Well to give you guys my example, here are my specs again:

i7 930 @ 2.80GHz
Radeon HD 5850 1GB GDDR5 @ 780MHz core / 800MHz memory (OC'd with MSI Afterburner)
6GB DDR3 (3x2) 1600

Game Settings:

All high (AA x4) @ 1920x1080 60Hz

I'm sorry I don't have any FPS recorded. As far as I can tell my FPS don't drop as much as can be noticed when in cities than when in open areas. The only time I can notice a drop is in dense dust clouds (like from bombs), smoke from smoke nades has no effect oddly enough.
I will check my FPS next week for you since I had already planned to do that for someone else.
I'm currently working on installing better cooling in my case because my card runs a little hot (with the side fan I just installed it peaks at 66 degrees C on full load.) I blame that on my egg cooler from XFX which has absolutely no form of heatsinks on the RAM modules or VRM.

You won't get all the features with a free version of that anymore and the premium features are very useful, so you might look for something else that's completely free. Sorry that's the only one I know off the top of my head.

Just open the console and type "renderer.drawFps 1" just like that, without quotation marks, but with capital F, to show an in-game FPS meter in the top left-hand corner of your screen.

Change the 1 to 0 if you want to disable it again.

to whatshisname55: hi mate, just download FRAPS.. FRAPS show fps, record video game movies, screen capture software
very easy to use and tells you FPS at all times in clear way..

Also please measure in full 62/64 servers.. maps like muttrah city in built up areas. fallujah west, kokan..

I still do not see why one would use a 3rd party program that can potentially hog resources, when there is a perfectly fine in-game command to measure your frames per second.

I also fail to see how you keep coming up with Kokan as a city built area..

I got an I7 920, 12GB DDR3-1600 RAM, a Nvidia GTX295 all running at stock settings on a 24" (1920x1080) screen and I sure get drops in cities but it remains a playable fps (40+)..

I'd of hoped that's still playable considering if you're screen is @ 60Hz you're only going to be able to physically see a difference in FPS if it drops below 30FPS....

which one of these is FPS or what do they mean?
