[?] Swapping main menu music, possible?

Post by Limitbreaker »

As in title, I wanted to swap out current theme for the old one from 0.7 or so (nostalgia), how to do it and won't it kick me for some kind of MD5 mismatch?

Easy :razz:

All you have to do is modify "mod.desc" (make sure to backup it first) and open it with any text editor (I use notepad++ because regular notepad get a bit messy with bf2 files). Once it's done, check for the line "<music> common/sound/menu/music/Alkali-Main_Menu.ogg </music>" (without the quotes of course) and change the song to one you found in the common_client.zip OR you can use an other song from an other repertory by simply browsing it correctly (eg: <music> C:\Program Files\My tunes\my_custom_song.ogg </music>). Of course if you use a custom music, it must be in OGG, and sometime it doesn't work (Last time I was able to load the old music theme from 0.8, but wasn't able to load an other one...).

Oh, and if you want to know if it safe... IFAIK it depend on the server you play, SOME may add a custom checklist for PB which check this file. Me and a friend use a custom one and we, so far, never have any problems :grin:

Enjoy

what kind of .OGG must the files be? I tried to get the old bfv voices and music into eod, converted everything from .wav to .OGG with the CLV media player's converter but it didn't work. I had the option between OGG/ theora and OGG/ valdis.

@Wakain
Yeah, I've done a small search to find what I'm doing wrong and I found out that the files need some sort of specific values in order to work...
The complete tutorial is here Decoding / Encoding .ogg Files - Official BF Editor Forums, but I can resume it JFY :p
  1. Download this Download Bf2_Sound_Tools.zip
  2. Unpack the "Bf2 Sound Tools" folder somewhere (doesn't matter where, at least it unpacked).

    Now, I'll gave you the right values so you dont have to find them. The values for the main menu theme are : 160.003000 for the bitrate and the serial is 00003efb. If you want to know how to find those, continue to #3, if not, skip to #7.
  3. Now, copy the file you want to change in the folder where "Bf2 Sound Tools" is (for now, we want to change the main menu theme, so you have to get the Alkali-Main_Menu.ogg from common_client.zip).
  4. Open "Checkout_wav_setup_for_bf2.bat" with a text editor, and change "us_win_old.ogg" with the name of the file you've copied.
  5. Save, close and start it.
  6. It will show some random values, just pay attention on the serial and the nominal bitrate. Make sure to write them somewhere. Close the window once finished.
  7. Now get your new wav file and copy it in the "Bf2 Sound Tools" folder.
  8. Open Compile_ogg_for_BF2.bat with a text editor, change the "us_win.wav" with the name of your wav file. Now add the bitrate after -b and the serial after -s (by overwriting the old values of course).
  9. Save, close, and start the bat file.
  10. Copy your new ogg file where you want and then edit your mod.desc so the "<music> </music>" browse where it is. (the side of the "/" doesn't mater)
    Done! :D
@Linx_esp

Someone already made a tutorial about this. You can find it right here :-)

cheers bob!
I'd never get this far, within no time I'll be hearing "I hear you", "attack this hot zone, over" and "lock and load we're going in" while playing eod! :)

Great to hear! Let me know if this worked :)

But you can also add custom ones for map loadings :razz:

You only have to do the same steps as if your editing the main menu theme, but with the .desc file from a level instead. And it seem to not bother BF2 if you use the same serial and bitrate from the menu theme :o

I've tested the player_confirm_sl files first and it works, truely awesome! :)
after I've got the all the bfv playersounds in the next step will be some weapon and vehicle sounds, perhaps also some new/custom loadingmusic (I however do like eod's main theme very much). I hope Trahn forgives me for messing with his carefully recorded and implemented sounds.

excellent program btw, it'll take a lot of time to convert all the soundfiles but it's very easy to do so and in the end very satisfying as well.
I found it weird that quite some files have the same nominal bitrate and serial, files that seem unrelated in duration and size.
anyway, cheers again, I've been wrestling with this for some time now :p
