[UI] Making SL radio easier to use

Post by Bufl4x »

Problem:
Seeing SLs mark enemies on the map is rare, no one seems to do it anymore. It's a wonderful tool and makes communication easy when used effectively, but it's awkward and not user friendly.

Idea:
Get rid of the set distance menu and have the game automatically do that instead. You can already do this by just guessing the distance without getting the map out so it wouldn't be a big change, but a step towards making the menus a bit easier to use.

And after what i bet they just crawl back 2 pr, when they have enough of enemies who can spot u through walls, hill and etc even now knowing what u there.
I think perhaps there might be a middle road between the two.
I know I am trying to learn to automatically check the range when I am in the tab map but I often forget and have to reopen the map.

get on mumble, so the squad leaders are in direct radio contact and dont need markers anymore.

It's already pretty darn easy to use, and making the game do it automatically could be wonky.

People just need to learn to use it more... it's not that it's hard, it's just unfamiliar and they don't think about it while they run around like chickens with their heads cut off.

This is really bad idea. It would mean moving backward. On teamwork servers you see a lot of use of markers. You have GLTD and caps lock, and if you're a bit experienced you can estimate, this three ways make it really easy to put marker fast.

I like the system. You can be hiding and spotting contacts. I don't find it hard to use at all.

Just a little bug I have, if you select the distance, you can't select the options on the left and right (just top and bottom). Just press T again and it's fixed.

Dont think its bug but feature as it reads on manual.

That's true.

Well, I guess it was a bug they couldn't fix so it became a feature, and the manual writer tried to minize it

On teamwork servers sure, and what about the rest of them? What i'm saying is, in real life i could estimate more accurately cause of better depth perception and situational awareness.
You can already skip the step of taking your map out and placing a marker which takes precious seconds.
It would be better to have the game do the range estimation. Make it less acurate, for example if you spot with SL radio range is in 100(50) increments but on the map it's 50(exact)

Well also i think it would be better to have the orignal in a intense firefight when you want to call out enimies on the radio you can take cover and look at where you want to put the marker and put the range of where they are in safty. But in your version you have to peek your head out and look at the enemie so it actually might even make less people want to use teh radio!

I don't see any problems, except maybe the "deviation" in the marker position. I seem to frequently have markers that land 30 degrees off target.

I use the radio constantly, and try to encourage more people to use it. Once you get experienced with using it, it becomes second nature: See something, estimate range, call in a marker on it. I don't worry too much about getting the range and position perfect - although I'm getting pretty good at guessing ranges - the point in my mind is to get the general location out there, so others can respond. Mumble isn't always the most effective way of communicating these things, I've found. And double redundancy doesn't hurt.

Tap W or S before placing marker, it solves it because body aligns with the head.

The removal of the 3D marker made the spotting even more clunky as you do need to open the map to check what the distance is. So now you have to do 5 things:

1. Mark target with attack command
2. Open map to get the distance
3. Switch to radio
4. Set the distance
5. Set the marker

We are aware of the issue and we'll see if we can do something to make it easier to work with.

Even when you have to do all of that, it takes me 10 seconds tops. I have never had trouble with it, besides a rogue marker here and there.

True. Opening map takes 1-2 seconds. Nothing hard to do that, you even don't have to see your target,

Is this such a bad thin though? I mean, in real life you'll also have to check the map for an accurate spot.

But on the other hand the SL will most likely have a navigator and a radioman so he is doing 2 jobs + his SL tasks :p
