Smooth to choppy after 1 map

Post by Cinders »

Hi all, just asking around, trying to figure this out. Fairly high end gaming system, running BF2 :P RMM on high with 4XAA, runs at top notch FPS, no slow downs even in heavy action.

After one map, sometimes more, it will load slower and I will sit forever on the "select squad" screen after map load up.

Then I get horrid performance. FPS low, mouse response slow, click response slow, my guy looks like he's glitching while running (just takes left steps or something).

Tried bumping down all visuals, but same problem.

Any ideas?

RAM good, CPU temp good, GPU temps good, etc. CPU's about 60-70% while playing, ram is only around 40-60% used.

I have to drop the game completely, and on restarting it, I have max performance again. But degrades after a map.

AMD 6000+ 64 X2
6 gigs 2ch ram
win 7 home
SLI 2X Nvidia 250GTS (512mb each) on a dual 16X PCI-E.

Looking at 54C on GPUs, at 59C CPU (core 1, core 2 is 52C). RAM never tops 4gigs.

No viruses. Cleared caches. Changed graphics to max low. Changed resolutions.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

we might need some more information:
- win7 32 or 64 bit
- does the ram/gpu/cpu change in any in between the 2 maps
- any other computer problems that might be related
- run a ram stress test

this doesnt seem to be a common bug, therefore you will have to do some testing, if you have time, id first of all reinstall though.

Thanks skull, I'll try a reinstall first. I hate having to deal with all the patch downloads, but best idea, you're right.

Also, it's Win 7 64bit Home.

RAM test is good (via MEMTEST)

Besides the OSDT temp sensors, I haven't been able to see the CPU load, since alt-tabbing throws it off. I'll have to graph it to get that.

I'll get back after a reinstall, but the biggest question is the overall performance. Even with low FPS, the mouse would respond quickly, just choppy. The entire game is slowed down. Maps, anything, it's all slow. And the weird "left foot, left foot, left foot" run, where it skips the right foot animation. And the low FPS inside a bare building, but random bouts of normal FPS in a major battle inside a manned vehicle.

Anyway, will try that first. Thanks.

Ok, the problem is back again.

I have a new gamepad that I can monitor GPU, CPU, etc, also, so that helps

It's actually seems to be more than just graphics. My guy stutter steps runs, voices are stuttered, and I can't get some functions to work in game. VOIP is stuttered also.

I play one map at 75+ FPS, then the next map loads and I"m getting 45-60fps for about 5 minutes. Then it degrades rapidly to 3 FPS. Stuttering.

6000+ X2 Athlon 64 bit (dual core)
6 gig 2ch DDR2 RAM
2X (SLI) Geforce 250 GT (512mb each)
Win 7 Home 64 bit
No extra background services or anti-virus going.

CPU is normal temp at 65% load
GPUs are less than 50 degrees at 4-10% load
RAM is using 2.5 gigs total
Graphics card RAM starts at 120-250 MB used on first map, second map it bumps up to 390-480 MB. Can't figure out why it's filling the memory of Vid Cards only. This still shouldn't be a problem as it's below the max, though why BF2 is using effectively 960 MB of VRAM is beyond me.

I just recently cleaned the case out a few days ago. Thoroughly blew out everything. Changed Vid Card positions within SLI, double checked cables.

All other games run a max graphics smooth as butter at 50+ FPS minimum.

I downgraded the graphics on BF2 to low and lowered resolution, still the problem, though it seems delayed a bit more.

Appreciate any help. Hate to keep reloading the game.

BTW, reloading game fixes problem completely until next map.

BF2 isn't a multi-threaded game. As such it can't take advantage of more than one CPU/core effectively,
but systems with more than one CPU/core will still try to split up the work load anyway.
This can cause problems for some systems when the duel work threads don't add up.
You can try the short cut fix below or if than doesn't help try setting your affinity with 'Task Manager'.

Mutli core/processor causing errors
If you have more than one cpu or 'core' you can set the 'affinity'
(force the game to run on one cpu or core only) through your shortcut by adding
AFFINITY 2
to your shortcuts 'target' string like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" start /AFFINITY 2 +fullscreen 1
Your shortcut can do more. I use:
start +widescreen 1 +szx 1600 +szy 1200 +restart +playerName xxxx +playerPassword xxxx

Replace XXXX with your user name and password

Adding this string bypasses the startup video, logs you in and takes you directly to the server browser.

Good luck

Thanks a lot. I'll give it a go. Even if it doesn't work, it'll help me skip the 2 hour loading of PR just to get in a game :)
