Why was training mode removed?

Post by Punkbuster »

Hey guys,
I just want to know why training was removed?
IMO it was a very good thing for beginners and I would like it back (This is not a suggestion).

So why was it taken away?

It was removed because it diddent offer the training players needed. with all the servers and "CLOWNS" that would rape heli or jet training. or piss of mec.

The training mode was basically PR with vBF2 settings, ie, low spawn timers for vehicles and players. The problem with this was that it encouraged arcadey, spammey gameplay and enticed players that wanted fast paced action to solely play on training servers.

Long story short, it allowed players to play PR in the complete opposite style that the developers were aiming for and shot down the hopes of many first time players.

Well, I guess you have a point, But I think instead of removing it, They could tweak it a little where MEC could also have Jets like in the regular Kashan and that they don't give a server license unless the server provider agrees to have the servers administerd 24/7 or something like that...

While I can see your point and did see this happening often, I found joining and empty or near empty training server very helpful in learning to fly. In the fuller servers (even with the asshats) there was nearly always someone ready to evac me by chopper if I had bailed out of my jet.

On a whole I found training servers extremely useful.

I miss training, now i have to wait 10 mins for a jet to spawn and some 1 might steal it, bots get their own **** so assets are limited. i want to practise flying the jet, but i end up spending 3/4 of my time in the base waiting for some 1 to crash or respawn jet.

Its just practise, not representation of PR, we want to learn how to use stuff effectively, we can learn spawn times and importance from real servers

Your best option in that case is starting a local server. I know it's not going to offer the same stuff that the training servers did but it gives you the chance to practice without interference.

It seems to me that servers that allowed this to occur should have been told to not misuse the training servers. I found the training mode an invaluable method of learning assets. As far as using a local server, Ive sent several PM's asking about getting a server license with no luck thus far.

Tactical Gamer was an Excellent Server. Yeah that's right, I said that, go a head and BAN ME from your server now!

You don't need a server license or an actual server to create a 'local server'.

i am now using the UKWF training server and It's a million times better than co-op, fun and not spammed, traing is mainlt used for jets and co-op for infantry and vehicals.

I frankly don't miss training mode - basic things like "how does this AT-4 work" or "how do I drive a tank" can be done on local, and stuff like working with a squad just has to be picked up with practice.

As already stated, the training mode was removed because of people who 'abused' it by turning it into a bloody deathmatch, where (on kashan) it turned out that the US was nuking the MEC (not literal) with their planes and such. There were also an significant amount of players ruining the gameplay for others.

I must admit, I also did some things that others may see as abusive. What I did was the following. I took a spec-ops kit (the one with slams) and put them on a motorcycle just outside of the US airbase. After that I drove th motor into the base, and onto the runway. As back then runways were destructable, and the FF on that server was turned off, you could drive over the runway, while every second there sounded a nice explosion, and the runway was considered KIA.

It was fun to hear the pilots raging, and screaming into their keyboards. Ow, those good old days.

But because of those kind of things, the highly honoured DEV's their work was not used the way they wanted, and removed it.

cheers,
-Human

Few reasons...

- We didn't like new players first joining internet training servers (a natural first step), to see the vBF2 style spam that happened on them, giving them a false first impression.

- We didn't like people playing training mode just so they could do vBF2 style spam, and mess up honest people actually trying to train.

- Co-Operative mode offers the training needed to be able to "safely" enter an online server (as well as reading the manual). You can practice flying planes and helicopters without the worry of wasting assets, and you get someone to shoot at in the process that won't hate you for killing them over and over.

As for the problem of SP vehicles handling differently than MP vehicles, that has been fixed, you can only enter MP air vehicles as pilot (you can still enter SP vehicles, just not fly them, since they have vastly different handling, giving a false impression)

- One complaint is that what happens if you crash/die in your vehicle, it takes longer to respawn in coop. Well if on a local server, you can simply type "admin.restartmap" into the console, and you get all you're wasted vehicles back straight away ;) .

If on an online server, obviously you can't do this (without admin support anyway), but you should train first how to use the vehicle without dying (it's mainly air vehicles that's the problem here) in a local server, then for more advanced tactics with multiple people (such as gunning, tanking, etc), then go online, and this shouldn't be a major problem. You can always go infantry while waiting for your vehicle to respawn...

TL;DR

We feel that Co-Operative gives a better training environment than the old Training mode for new players. Training mode will never be coming back into PR. If you really want training mode back, there are community made maps that offer a similar experience.

---

Oh, and for those who honestly didn't know, a "local server" is you creating a game where only you play. If you're set up on a LAN or through Hamachi, others can join you, but lets not go into that right now. Basically, it's BF2's way of "singleplayer". You do not need a PR server license to make a local server, you do not need server files to make a local server. Simply choose it in the menu, then select your map and go create game, and you're away.

Wouldn't mind the ability to practice with the squad leader kit: getting used to the radio commands, target marking, building fobs, etc. Not sure how to pull that off though; guess a dead afternoon server full of noobs is a good place to start.
