Performance system - Low FPS

Post by Cohort »

I experience unusually low FPS in this game. I have tried Mattruh City online with 64 players and my FPS ranges from 22-70. I experience low fps (26 Avg) in the middle of the city or in the general combat zone whether im just looking at from a distance or in it. Many people are telling me that is low for my system specs. I have no major background programs running, a total of 60 processes. No spyware/viruses. Things like AVG anti-virus, daemon tools, fraps, joy2key, joystick software and EVGA precision tools. I used Daemon tools to run an image for the game which may i add is legit but only because my cd drive is noisy. Im thinking maybe the OC on my cpu is unstable, graphics drivers are not good for this game or maybe this is just expected performance. Whats funny is ARMA2 on medium settings runs better :/

System:

Windows 7 64Bit (havent updated in a year at least.)
GTX 285 260.99 drivers
Q6600@3GHZ
4GB PC8500 ram @ 400mhz
X-Fi sound card 24bit HD audio
340GB x2 in Raid mode 0
6142MB page file
Nvidia controls default

BF2 Settings:
1600x900@60hz
All settings High except:
Dynamic lighting and shadows at medium
AA Off
View distance 100%
EAX on
sound quality at High

3Dmark Vantage P14500

I appreciate any meaningful advice you guys have, thanks!

Everything looks good except your RAM
Should it not be running at 1066MHz?

Wait do you mean good as in i should be getting better performance? The ram is actually at 333mhz or 1330 mhz total because it is in dual channel mode which keeps a ram to FSB ratio at 1:1 which i was told is good for stability. Maybe i should increase dram frequency and see if that helps?

Since BF 1.5 you don't need the CD present anymore either. You can switch of your daemon lite.

Oh okay that is good to know, thanks.

Tarthkin wrote:I am suddenly having the same problem with low FPS. I recently upgraded to Win 7 after running PR in Vista with no problems. On large maps like Muttruh I drop to 15 fps. I run everything on high with AA at x8 and view scale at 100%. My specs are as follows:

Q6600 2.4ghz overclocked to 3.0ghz
4gb DDR2 RAM @1066ghz
GTX260 w/216 cores @626ghz
200gb HD with only BF2 installed on it

I run PR at 1680x1050 @60hz

As i stated earlier, I was running PR on Vista with no problems so the only thing that has changed is my OS. I never dipped below 20fps in cities before but now any time i enter conjested areas my fps seems to get stuck at 15.
What Windows 7 is it, Home Premium? or w/e.

Actually, those look like pretty normal frame rates. I run a much more powerful system than either of you (specs in my profile) but the main thing is that I have a HD 5850 that I run OC'd during gaming and when I'm in the city I can drop down to 40-70 FPS. I run everything maxed at 1920x1080p.
If you have decent cooling in your case though you should go ahead and try OCing your GPU. Download MSI Afterburner or something like that with an error testing program and you could probably squeeze some more frames out of it. DO READ UP ON IT FIRST BECAUSE I DON'T WANT THE BLAME IF YOU BRICK YOUR CARD.

Had the same FPS Probs on the most city maps like fallujah west:

On a Lan Server Map i host alone i got minumum 35 FPS; not much.

In Multiplayer FPS drops because of more vehicles, Vehicle LOD bug, destructable Objects ect...

BTW i was playing on a GTX470//4GB RAM//[email protected].

I tested almost every driver and gfx Setting...

Finaly the solution: I Upgrade my cpu to [email protected] Ghz and got in EVERY Situation 60 FPS due Vsnyc limitation on highest setting.

Note the the GPU is in IDLE mode the most time, so PR is VERY CPU HUNGRY

Garack, I'm doubting that it's the CPU here since it's a fairly capable one. Of course if OP did upgrade to a newer CPU I'm sure there would be some increase in FPS.
Tarthkin, the other poster having issues here is no doubt suffering from inadequate graphics processing power. Drop that AA down to x4 and I guarantee you will see a performance boost. If that's not enough set it down to x2 or try messing with the other settings.

It is the CPU, a GTX 275 runs exactly the same frames on a q6600@3,2 as a GTX470 @high settings. I tested this.

And i tested this:

Are you running without compatibility mode for both PR.exe and BF2.exe or...?

Well i keep reading that PR is CPU intensive so would a better GPU really help then? I run EVGA precision and my GPU activity always reads something like 20% usage. I could try to overclock, i still have many things to try to troubleshoot it but at this point i have kind of given up and will deal with the the low fps until i get better hardware.
AfterDune;1545881']Are you running without compatibility mode for both PR.exe and BF2.exe or...?
Yes it is without compatibility mode enabled for both exes
Download SpeedFan and see if your CPU is overheating.

I was getting FPS problems similar to the one related in this thread. All I did was place new thermal grease on my CPU and heatsink and now I play mostly 70-100 FPS on most maps; where before it would go to 15-20 FPS.

Might be unrelated to your problems, but I would just check anyway. You can also look at your BIOS to see your CPU's heat statistics.
Well my CPU during load in PR usually norms around 55-58C, i believe that is normal for a fan cooled CPU with overclock.

I should probably also check to see if i am experiencing this memory leak issue as the other poster..

compatibility mode has nothing to do with it. it simply cant.

btw i tested 4 systems with differnt os (win764, win732, win xp 32) and different hardware, drivers and gfx settings, cleared cache, without antivirus, fresh installs and so on.

cost me days....

when your mate has the same system and better FPS please do this:

1.) you both start a fallujah west insurgency std map in LAN mode.

2.) spawn at the lower point as insurgeny.

3.) make a screenshot with fraps at this point(its the worse performance point i figured out - 100 metres to the east from spawn)

post your screns like this:

http://img3.fotos-hochladen.net/uploads ... grebht.jpg

http://www.fotos-hochladen.net/uploads/ ... viqt1p.jpg

Setup: [email protected], 8 GB DDR3 1333, Win7 64, Nvidia 266.58, GTX470

Settings: High, AA x 4, Vsync and 16xAF enabled in driver.

with a [email protected] at the same spot i got around 35 frames.

A [email protected] with ati 5850 ddr3 and 4 gig ram on win7 64 get around 35 frames too.

I doubt that your roomate get better frames with the equal system. please post.

Edit: you mentioned the memory leak. it has nothing to do with win7. BF2 eats a lot of ram due bad coding. with patch 1.5 BF2.exe is allowed to take more then 1.5 GB RAM. Normaly this is prevented by a flag.

When you ran out of ram you simplay Crash. Most users crash at map change then. More RAM help.

When you get down to only 1 FPS then check your page file. is it big enough? is it heavily fragmented?

Btw. for the vista users: It has a horrible performance and eats more ram then winxp and win 7 together :) sometimes its running prozzeses while gaming that boost your fps down.

tweak vista, stop useless processes (i killed 16 (!) in my old vista days)...or even better get win7 64

I concur, I was wondering why Sangin was performing doggedly in Win 7 but running fine in xp. Turning off xp compatability mode in Win 7 has hugely improved my performance and gives me a much better benchmark to work with when optimising the map. THANKYOU!!! You just made my birthday!!! =D
