Intel SpeedStep makes game lag

Post by Skull »

hi,

Computer Specs:
Win7
i5-760 (related?)
Asus P7P55 LX P55
- intel speedstep en/disabled

intel speedstep:
its basically a bios option which lets the os handle the cpu usage. if you disable it the cpu stays at a constant - in my case - 2.8ghz (133 x 22 multiplier) clock. if you enable, the os makes the cpu clock down if the cpu is unused (down to 133 x 9 multiplier).

symptoms:
when i turn on intel speedstep in my bios my pr starts to lag like crazy, 15-30 fps instead of 80-100(+), in the menu aswell as ingame. furthermore longer loading times. i didnt find a way to check it but obviously my cpu stays downclocked even if i start the pr, which leads to this problems.

similarities in other applications:
none. tested warcraft 3, bad company 2, cinebench, prime95. no problems at all.

solution:
turn it off. i want to keep it turned on though since the cpu isnt stressed as much, aswell as the power usage of the pc drops dramatically (my pc is running almost 24/7, mostly with <10% cpu usage, ie. films, music etc.)

Maybe you can update your BIOS?

So the SpeedStep feature isn't recognizing PR as a CPU hogging program. Does this happen with vBF2? It sounds like maybe you just need a way to make PR tell your BIOS that it needs the CPU at full throttle when it runs. Sorry though, I don't know how you would go about doing this, maybe part of the target in the exe?
