Map view distance
Hello everyone,
I've got a question and I hope I placed this thread in the right section. I wondered if the map view distance was reduced with newer versions of PR?
Last time I played on Basrah map as a sniper the maximum distance I was able to overwatch has been around 300-350 m, which is like nothing when providing intel on enemy movements. Is there a special reason why the view distance is configured to be that low? Do you think it should be increased? I'd like to hear your opinion.
P.S.: Before somenone is going to ask: my view distance setting in video options is set to 100%.

Re: Map view distance
a quick thougth could be that it needs to be fair for everybody. The fact that you and me could look more than the max. distance, dosent mean the rest can, before i upgraded my PC i had to lower it to 75% becuase my PC couldnt handle it with the lowest grafics.
So i think its just a way to make it fair for every one.

Well, it may have been.
You aren't at the same distance from the Hotel as you are in the second picture.
So you can't really tell, but for me, it feels as if the View Distance is much farther on Basra now. Not 100% sure, but it just feels like it when I'm driving armor in the desert.

You can see the hotel at 280m(pic 1)
You can not see it at 380m(pic 2), only if you look at it with the edge of your screen(pic 3).

Re: Map view distance
I just checked the 0.85 version (yes I have kept the old files) of al basrah and the viewdistance and fog are exactly the same as they are now.
Some maps such as fallujah west and korengal valley have had their viewdistances INcreased.

For realisms sake the view distance should definintely be increased. Most of the weapons irl are configured to work between 500-1000m anyway

my gtx 470 and my previous gtx 275 are most times in idle mode even on big maps. cpu is the key, but rendering on todays gfx cards is fine , so give us moooooorrreee View distance and objects and statics and better textures f?r stones :=

Re: Map view distance
Having 100m more viewdistance on Al Basrah feels much more realistic:

On Al Basrah it works pretty well, even on older computers with a 8800gt.
But viewdistance can't be raised on just every map.
It depends on the maximum possible number of objects in your viewdistance.
Another thing what you have to keep in mind is, that the view distance may have a great influence on the gameplay, especially on insurgency.
So other things might need to be changed as well.

You also need to consider that with the added players models & vehicle statics in that city, it might not run as smooth.

It's because of how 3D environments are rendered by game engines. They create perspective using something called a "frustum". You can see objects not up to a certain radius around the camera, but up to a certain "depth" into the screen. Towards the edge of your screen, the depth is the same, but the radius is larger, so you can see further.Maverick wrote:I could use a new graphics cardI'm not sure on how the map comes into view more from the side of your screen, always confused me

Re: Map view distance
Wow, that looked cool!
APC's would actually become stand-off again, rather than sitting * just * in the range of RPG's. Insurgents would have to stay within the confines of the city, and SPG's would be useless.
If there could be an expansion of the city so that it's 2 or 3 times as big (enormous task I know), that would negate the new advantages and be a very interesting game to play..
Mind you I don't personally think that BF2 is set up for large view distances, 150m seems like a mile-long sniper kill.
