Best Anti Aliasing setting performance quality ratio
Hi peepz,
what would you guys say is the best Anti Aliasing setting (getting rid of jaggies) that looks sharp but also doesnt drop your fps to hard. Keep in mind i ask this question to people who only accept good quality, as i have a fairly decent rig and play with everything high and AF 16*
My only experience sofar is using 4* ingame bf2 native anti aliasing, i did not see a difference compared to 8* just a massive fps drop.
My ati 6970 has so many options like adaptive aa , super aa , etcetera i simply cant figure out which one is best quality and stil allows me to maintain a decent framerate.
Which setting you guys use ? Lets also maybe compare screenshots to determine what looks best. Ill have a mutrah city screenshot and a screenshot of a map with a lot of undergrowth, yamalia really kills my rig with all the gras when sniping/zooming/binos
Mutrah http://img265.imageshack.us/i/aa4xaf16xhd6970allhighi.png
yamalia http://img813.imageshack.us/i/aa4xaf16x ... highi.png/ (this stuff really makes my videocard burn , fan goes crazy loud

I may be crazy but I actually get better fps by maxing anti aliasing. I've heard this from a few people as well.

I dont use the game AA, since i dont know why, dosent seems to do as well as my GPU's can do on its own.

Re: Best Anti Aliasing setting performance quality ratio
I have an HD 5850 and using Catalyst Control Center I set SMOOTHVISION: Anti Aliasing to 8x(Max) with Filter set to Edge-detect, Anisotropic Filtering to 16x(Max), Mipmap Detail Level to "High Quality" and Anti Aliasing Mode to Adaptive Multi-Sample AA which is the middle setting, and I get absolutely no lag with ingame settings maxed, but if I switch Anti Aliasing Mode to Super-sample AA it looks alott better and I dont get lag unless im in an extremely undergrowth heavy environment, like Kokan, and binoculars lag me pretty bad near undergrowth at super-sample.
Adaptive Multi-Sample works for me, no lag at all, no undergrowth or alot of undergrowth, zoomed or not, its perfect, and the only noticeable loss in crispness would be the undergrowth and trees.
If your rig can handle it I would say max it, shouldn't have a problem if the rest of your system is up to par with your video card, I have a Phenom II x4 3.4GHz Processor, 4 Gigs 1333MHz Ram, HD5850 and run at max (game settings and CCC settings) no lag until I hit heavy undergrowth.

Re: Best Anti Aliasing setting performance quality ratio
What manufacturer made your GPU? I have a 5850 and I can't turn up the settings without lag, mostly it's just super sample that won't work, but I also lose a lot of frames from turning the sample rate up. Also would 8x with edge-detect turn it into 24x? Do you OC your card?Reddeath wrote:I have an HD 5850 and using Catalyst Control Center I set SMOOTHVISION: Anti Aliasing to 8x(Max) with Filter set to Edge-detect, Anisotropic Filtering to 16x(Max), Mipmap Detail Level to "High Quality" and Anti Aliasing Mode to Adaptive Multi-Sample AA which is the middle setting, and I get absolutely no lag with ingame settings maxed, but if I switch Anti Aliasing Mode to Super-sample AA it looks alott better and I dont get lag unless im in an extremely undergrowth heavy environment, like Kokan, and binoculars lag me pretty bad near undergrowth at super-sample.

Its XFX, whats the rest of your specs? and super sample is the border for me, with it I lag at undergrowth, without I do fine. I do OC using CCC just slightly, and yea as far as I know Edge Detect bumps your Anti Aliasing to 24x.whatshisname55 wrote:What manufacturer made your GPU? Re: Best Anti Aliasing setting performance quality ratio
whatshisname55 are all your settings on high ? Like shadows and lightning, those will eat away at performance, just look at my undergrowth screenshot. Please post us your screenshots so we can compare a bit
Lets keep this topic as apples to apples comparison so all high settings and everything on qualitiy in CCC. If your settings are different, report it.
Oh and maybe add resolution to, i play at 1920*1200.

Re: Best Anti Aliasing setting performance quality ratio
I've got an i7 930 at stock 2.8GHz. Would that be the problem? I haven't gotten a chance to do any OCing on my CPU but I will get to it eventually and hope to see some sort of performance increase. Any other specs you're interested in can be found in my profile.
I run PR at max settings at 1920x1080. Hold on, I took some screens last night for comparison, I'll post em up in a bit.
Here they are, "BF2 Settings" means 8x AA and 16x Anisotropic Filtering set in BF2, type of sampling was set in CCC:
24x Super Sample AA + 16x Anisotropic Filtering | Set 2
BF2 Settings - Super Sample AA | Set 2
BF2 Settings - Multi Sample AA | Set 2
The sample rate didn't seem to make a difference in quality or framerate. The type of sampling however has noticeable differences between Multi Sample AA, Adaptive Multi Sample AA, and Super Sample AA. I use Adaptive Multi Sample currently for a nice balance between quality and performance and I chose to let BF2 handle the sample rate since I didn't notice any difference. I did see a large difference in texture quality on the ground and soldiers' clothing between 16x Anisotropic Filtering through CCC and the same rate through BF2. I've decided to override BF2's AF through CCC because I didn't notice a difference between framerate but CCC forced 16x AF looks much nicer than BF2's.

Re: Best Anti Aliasing setting performance quality ratio
You guys make me giggle. You all some to have far better rigs than me and yet you all have some sort of issue.
But me on my old Trusty AMD 2.6gig Duel core from over 4 and a bit years ago with a then nVidia 8600GTS (I Now have a GTX285). And there was no hardware lag. I Play at 1920x1200 Rez with full AA and every setting in the game set to high and every setting in the nVidia control panel set to "application controlled" or the highest setting. I Have played like that every since my old AMD 2800+ (clock speed was about 2000Mhz) with a nVidia 6600GT.
Here is a tip. Stop with the open porn torrent sites.

Re: Best Anti Aliasing setting performance quality ratio
Actually I don't have any issues with my rig. A long time ago I came to the conclusion that the main reason I get lag with high CCC settings is because of my resolution.

4 ingame AA looks beatiful enough for me...But my GTX470 is in idle mode while playing PR..Must have something to do--Perhaps i try Trasparent AA, so it looks a lot better at fences and 2D shapes but cost alot..lets see.

MsQAA is an option on newer ATi Cards, maybe try that?

Spatial anti-aliasing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the most non-technical explanation, it makes edges look rounder/smoother but it does have quite a impact of you're pc's performance so only turn it on/up if you have a decent pc.

Re: Best Anti Aliasing setting performance quality ratio
Actually I would consider it a good thing that you had Super Sample set while taking screens because it has higher visual quality than Adaptive Multi Sample. If you were able to run on Super Sample without too much FPS drop you should use it at least when taking important screenshots.Zoddom wrote:OMG GUYS, why didnt you come out with this earlier?!?!?!?!?!?!?
