i7-950 Stock High Idle Temps

Post by centralhigh76 »

A few months ago I got a new build and I have just notice my Idle temps are running at 45-53*C. I have it all stock for now (3.07Ghz, With Stock cooler) I have reseated my heat sink 3 times and thermal paste isn't the issue. my Voltage is at 0.944 V. If I run Prime 95 in 30 seconds i up to 1008C+ then I quite.

Specs: i7-950

Speed: 3.07GHz
Voltage: 0.944
Cooler: Stock Heatsink w/Fan
Case: Antec 1200 (4 120mm Intake, 1 200mm & 2 120mm Outtake)
Case Temp: 23*C
Room Temp: 20*C
CPU Temp Idle: 45-68*C
CPU Temp Load: 100*C + (Within 30seconds)

I know these temps cannot be standard. I am wanting to OC in the near future and theres no point in spending more money on a better cooler for a lower clock than others.

When you put the thermal paste back on, how much did you use?

About the size of a grain of rice. I know how to add thermal paste i've used after market coolers before. I know how to reseat a heatsink.

What are the typical idle and load temps for stock 950's with stock coolers?

Idle: 38*-42*C The thing I have problems with is that it gets up to 68*C idle. I ran Real Temp for 3 hours idle and that was the result.

Load: 80*- 100*C Then if I were to get a high load im going past 100*C within 30seconds and I dont want to see how hot after 2 minutes.

Perhaps you simply have a bad CPU, is there a chance to get it replaced?

I got it from newegg so they are normally good about that but I would like to try to avoid it if possible.

Is running Prime95 somehow causing the voltage or clock to change?

Try running another CPU intense program like a game or something else you can think of and check how your voltage and clock changes.

I thought i7-9xx didnt need thermal paste?

What made you come to this conclusion? Also changing voltages are normal, since the core voltage gets reduced when the cpu is idle.

I have a i7-930, and

Does intel i7-930 have thermal paste or pad - CPUs - CPU-Components
Thermal paste with stock cooler? - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/28862 ... rmal-paste

its preapplied on the heatsink

Yes when your first install the stock heatsink it has pre-applied thermal paste. But if you take it off you NEED to clean of the paste and add new.

you can use the old paste but its recommended to use new. I used higher grade paste anyways.

A credit card or anything else that can scrape really. Make sure you clean up the heatsink base and the CPU with some alcohol afterward to ensure a good seating with the new TIM.

Yup what whatshidname said I like to use 90% isopropyl alcohol.

I decided i'm going to RMA the processor.
