A good system?

Post by arjan »

I'm planning on buying a new PC
And I was thinking of something like this:
Processor: Intel Core I5 760 2.80 GHz, Boxed, Excl. Videochip, Quad Core
Motherboard: GigaByte GA-P55A-UD3
Videocard: GigaByte GeForce GTX 460 OC 1024 MB
Casing: Cooler Master Sileo 500 Zwart, no supply
Supply: GigaByte Superb 550p 550 Watt, 24 Pins
Cardreader: HP 22-in-1 Media Card Reader black
DVD-Burner: Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE S-ATA, Bulk, black
Hard disc: WD Caviar Black 1 TB, 7200 Rpm, 32 MB, S-ATA II/300 (Refurbished)
Memory: Adata 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 DC Kit
809,-
What are the thoughts on this prebuild computer?

Have you considered the Sandy Bridge i5? You'll get .30 GHz more speed for your buck, .50 for just a bit more, though maybe the Motherboard would make it more expensive.

No I haven't, I don't know much about hardware.
But I'm wondering if this could run mainly PR fine? :)

If this is a brand new build make sure you have an OS. With 4GB RAM you might need 64-bit. (I would get 64 bit anyways). If you cant afford the full windows 7 price look at OEM for about $100~ off.

BF2 Max frames is 100 ;) but games like arma 2 will run better!

8800GT: 100FPS
GTX 470: 102FPS

That card is working great for me (1920x1200, 2xAA, all highest = >45 FPS on all maps). Double check that you are getting the 1GB version and not the 756MB the latter has severe performance drops.

Personally I went with 6GB RAM (3x 2GB) to get 3 sticks and have it run in tripple channel mode. I am hitting a total of ~4.2GB used RAM when playing PR (very few other processes running) so I am able to switch off my page file and have 1.8GB as buffer, wouldn't be possible with only 4GB.

Make sure you get a 64bit OS, preferably win7 (Home Premium sufficed for my gaming machine).

on a side note: I believe the 100 is only the default for "game.lockfps" which would mean it could go higher if you set that value higher.
