Recon+CAS squad

Post by LegioX »

Just wondering if its a good idea, putting CAS and recon sniper squad together.
Advantages
- Save squad space
As recon squads only take 2 people, and CAS has 2-4.
- Instant communication
the recon squad can provide valuable intel or tell the CAS to prepare for laze.
- Priority
because of the fast com. recon squads can be given higher priority and this can be especially useful to the team since recon squads often seek HPTs (enemy armor, FOBs, major offensives). Also the CAS can know what they're targeting and decide if a bomb/missile is worth it. Often times, CAS gets wasted on trivial targets like half a squad of grunts (especially on public servers   )
The only disadvantage i can think of is sorting out who's who when creating the squad (since multiple people wanting to do the same task (like spotter) might join), and possibly overflowing VOIP (mumble mumble mumble ppl)

I think its a great idea...only if the right people are working together of course. The sniper has to not want to snipe the **** out of everyone he sees and realize hes more valuable to the team as recon.

What's better than one lone wolf?

Two lone wolves with dedicated assets.

This is a good tactic and I've been part of it before, it let's the pilots trust what there targeting because the whole squad is working to achieve the same goals/objectives. It let's the other squad leader consentrait on other enemy units and there own objectives, yet still receiving air support.
There's more but I forgot what's all good, as for what's bad well all the jobs besides spotting require some skill, so it's not a squad for anybody.

99.9% of 'recon' squads I have ever seen; never report anything they find to the team, always take sniper kit and lock squad, never join mumble and take trucks to drive themselves to the front.

You want a SL ideally as the CAS SL so you spend most of the time in your SOFLAM but have a rifle so you can get close up in the action.

Well you dont need snipers for recon, although their rifles are very useful to take down enemy AA-crews etc. But to recon for CAS you only need that SOFLAM. And it easy to take position in a building with the officer kit as you can engage enemies then where you used to flee away from with your sniper kit.

Just a few comments from my side.

I think that this should be promoted a bit more . . . But only when its necessary . . . . somtimes it makes sense not to have a transport squad mixed in with spotters and snipers This also improves teamplay if the sniper and spotter arnt part of the same squad . . . helps develope alternative issues that BF2 PR can overcome . . . communication wise suchas Mumble . . . promotes people to go into Squad leader channel and call out to CAS through that . . oppose to no other squad members hearing in VIOP . . . ;P

Don't be rude, L4gi.

Yes, Recon should integrate with CAS squads and form Special Joint Operations Unit, with snipers and marksmen, who would perform covert behind enemy lines missions, critical to the success of the team.
Why I think this would be good? Because it would simplify the communication procedures, since only one SL is talking for the whole unit.
Ideal squad:
2 snipers,
2 marksmen,
Rifleman Specialist,
and a pilot.

I've had success doing Recon with a 4 player recon element on Silent Eagle. 1x Officer, 1x Medic, 1x DM/Grenadier, 1x AR.
The idea is 4 players with these kits can get around easier than a 6 man squad that moves around shooting everything. By following basic fire control principles and avoiding open ground when possible, I've managed to go the entire round without losing a single recon member but helping CAS destroy several enemy emplacements, armor, etc. The idea is to avoid being engaged, and if you are engaged, placing heavy fire and falling back to another place and maneuvering, then report the contact, or hide and report the contact and either let them pass or ambush them. Just have to remember that getting kills is also a good way to get recognized and killed yourself.
Oh, and this was with a 100% pubby squad. I had never played with them before.

Our clan usually integrates the spotting element into the main CAS squad - so we have 2 (or more) pilots, one SL with an officer kit (or on rare instances, sniper) + maybe a medic. SL gets deployed on the battlefield, finds a safe location (& relocates from time to time), starts marking targets, CAS engages & then returns to the carrier. It works like a charm.

TomDackery: I don't believe you need 4 men for that - less is more in this case, and why not let the other inf squads take the grenadier kit anyway?

I always do that when I am flying CAS.
I ask the spotter to join my squad and it usually turns out good :)

The optimal way is for squad leaders to be on Mumble or similar with the CAS pilots. The squad leaders will call out and laze all targets theyre incapabale of taking out by themselves if they have any brain in them. After all, the CAS is there to support the ground troops and not vice versa as the pilots a bit too often seem to think by typing "CAS needz targez nao!!1!" in the chat.

If you have to go sniper (it's not THAT bad of an idea if you're a good one and you're feeling lone-wolfy :lol :) don't hog a squad slot, instead ask joining the CAS squad as their dedicated spotter.

Tried that on PRTA XD never saw so many bombs dropped and smoking enemy armor in my life before.
heres a good recon squad setup
4km maps
Sniper
Medic
Pilot x4
<2km that have CAS
Officer (maybe a better alt is Combat engineer, but I usually stay away from snipers on urban maps when I do recon, since you know, its suppose to be RECON and not CAMPING)
Medic
Spec
Rifleman AP (not AT!!) (I also don't do AR because the point of recon is to stealthily infiltrate objectives and alert the team of enemy positions, and when the SAW lights a place up its not exactly stealth. Also, a recon squad should be FAST, meaning GTFI and GTFO ASAFP. Rifle AP can cover the tracks and block critcal entry points)
Pilot x2 (pilots can be sniper overwatch when they die)
I haven't tried my specialized 2km maps yet so it might be wrong, but in theory it sounds pretty good.

I would do a Officer, Riflemen, Sniper, Medic.

Having both marksmen and snipers in one squad doesn't seems to smart to me. I also like the use marksmen in regular inf squads.
Sergeant First Class Guardian
Assistent Squad Leader
1st Squad, 1st Plt, A Company, 1st Bat
508th Parachute Infantry Regiment
US Army
1-1PLT/A/1B/508

In my opinion, its not about in wich sq is sniper, its about how everyone do the job!!!
Now days we have a lot of snipers only snipes people, when they see a armour they just hide, and do nothing, and we also have those pilots who just flying around and shooting everything on the other side of objective, and when u need CAS support, they are probably down!
First of all everybody need to know his role in squad, and its not Killing or making K/D ratio!
And i like pilots who are waiting in the base for CAS targets, teko off, destroy, land! Not like a spy plane who circling above the enemy!
Recon team: Officer, Sniper, medic or R. Specialist
their job spotter/marker, long range support, and cover for their arse!

Solute!

Methinks that currently, aircraft are just useless and armor can do what CAS does, but with immediate fire on target.

Methinks it's safe to say you've never experienced proper CAS action in PR.
