Are 4k maps 4 square kilometers or 4km X 4km???

I am trying to make a scale version of a certain area but don't want to get too deep without knowing... I realize that it could be a dumb question but I've read over numerous tutorials and have yet to find an answer...

a 1024x4 or 4km map is a 4km by 4km, or 4096 meters by 4096 meters map and has an area of 16.8km^2
