Replacement CPU.

Post by Valleyforge3946 »

Okay so my current rig is an AMD Anthlon II X2 5600+ overclocked to 3.2Ghz, Nvidia Geforce Galaxy GT240 Superclocked, 5GB Supertalent Memory @ 800Mhz, Mn264-LA Motherboard with MCP61, 2 500GB hard drives and 1 Lightscribe Multi-DVD drive and a Blu-Ray Drive. I am Looking to replace my current CPU as it is quite old and not always stable on my current motherboard. I only have around 100 dollars and i ave been looking for a suitable replacement. I prefer AMD chips as Intel is expensive and finicky. I've been looking at some of the New Phenoms and i am quite impressed. the 550-T is what i currently have my eye on and from what i've heard and seen.. AM3 CPU's will happily fit on an Am2 board. So... i am open to suggestions and advice. for those of you laughing at my Video card.. i recently bought a GTX560 and 104.53 is all i have left. i expect that with my current CPU i will be severly bottlenecked.

I assume the AM3 is a 3-core cpu? I would recommend trying to maximize the cores. Go for 4 if you can. I do not know the math to how it works out, but I think 2.0 quad core > 2.5 tri core.
Best line yet...

Yor close but not Quite. Am2 boards only support DDR2 memory and up to Phenom 1's. AM3 socket can not handle AM2 chips because of 2 extra pins. I'd prefer to just keep my mobo a bit longer but a tri-core wouldn't hurt. ;)

AM3 is simply the socket used by the latest AMD processors, including 3 core, 4 core, and 6 core models.

Ok, so skip the possibly irrelevant comment about the number of cores.

Sorry, I don't know my AMD lineup
