License Agreements

Post by Joeziah »

I was recently informed by Force Protection that I would need a license agreement to create a 3d model of one of their vehicles in a game mod.

That got me wondering, does BSS have licenses to realistically represent the vehicles which are in PR, and even if you don't how would companies even enforce that.

Being new to the modeling scene I was thinking of possibly even selling my model when I'm happy with it, but I can see where that might create some issues with Force Protection.

Anyone fluent on the Legalese of selling models of physical items or even using them in non profit games?

What is force protection?

And cant you just model something that exists in real life or from the top of your head, and not get any liablity issues?

Like gundam said their full of it. If it is a realistic military vehicle such as an Abrams or a BMP you can model it unrestricted, I'm sure there are issues modeling a Ferrari for example and then using it got profit purposes.

What is FOS?

Is that a license agreement?

So many weird stuff.

Anyways, copying something is usually called fraud, when you call it your work. Make sure you ask and all that. But i dont know if its any legal issues regarding it unless your planning on selling what others had made.

But if you see a picture of something and then try to model it, and then sell it, its individual. Maybe if you gave us an example of a specific thing your going for?

Also Psyko is FOS.

I wouldn't have thought that you would require explicit permission unless you are using some kind of references not avaliable to the wider public?

Unless you try and sell it I don't think they can do anything to you. So long as previously stated you don't claim it as your sole work.

Ya I don't know about all this.

May have shot myself in the foot by even contacting them which is sad.

I was simply requesting some better reference photos then the ones on Google, maybe even vague sketched low detail blue prints like...

you know...nothing you could actually use to build yourself a full size vehicle obviously, I sent them a similar photo of the one I just linked from a google search too so they don't get the idea....this guy wants schematics, honestly whoever I'm emailing with would be pretty dense if that is what they think I'm doing.

I specifically asked photos or representations that I could accurately portray the dimensions as realistically as possible in 3D.

They are just stone walling and told me I can't even build a 3d model without a license agreement.

I'm really tempted to just be like...you build military vehicles, your vehicles are bought with tax dollars, the least you can do is let people build 3d models un-bothered by compensation requirements for a rather ugly vehicle to begin with, unless they plan on selling baked models game ready or for CGI :-x
