[Help] New mapper

Post by the_ganman »

Hey folks, lately ive gotten more and more into the thinking that i would like to learn to map and hopefully one day get in PR. Ive gone through most of tutorials and i think i got a basic understanding of what im doing. Ive always wanted to a helicopter map, and being Canadian ive wanted to make a map that represents a Canadian city. I kinda fell for wanting to make a map representing Vancouver and there port there. Then came to thinking, theres really not that many statics depicting a north american city, that being said i still wanted to make a port city & possibly include the Canadians. Thee recent turmoil in Libya, made me think of Tripoli, taking a look at it, ive come to the conclusion its a very nice place to model and allows allot of the current stactics. And hopyfully avoiding making something to close to our beloved mutrah.

This is the generaly area ive though of as be a good place

The airport being 1 main, the port area being the other. Nuff bout that Q&A TIME :D

1) What do you guys start on first, do you work the elevation and what not from scratch?
2) Is every building and what not in the PR files free game to use in the maps me not taking credit for them of course or must i get permision.
3) Light maps confuse me, must i make shadows and what not for every static or will the game sort that out for me.
4) when you guys started did you have some one mentoring you or was it a swim among the sharks have fun kids.
5)Theres the default textures in the editor, is every bf2 map made using those? and can more be added or can they be changed... etc
6) are Bf2SF stactics usable in PR maps withough any problems?

Thanks for any help

I wouldn't. Hainan East, Beirut, Raz el Mazri and Vadso are all maps with the typical Muttrah amphibious assault. Try flipping it around and having a different angle of attack, although in game it wouldn't make much of a difference it would look much more fresh when completed.

I'd start out on a 1km first if its your first time mapping, 512 even just to get the hang of things.
