Requesting Squad Leading Tips

Hey guys (and girls?),

I've been squad leader in most games I play, primarily only infantry. I have my ups and downs (about 60% top squad at end of game, sometimes 2nd or 3rd).

Basically, is there a set of "Golden Rules" or important tips in terms of infantry tactics? I.E. Don't run in the middle of the street, don't fire at APC's / Tanks if the squad has no anti-tank kits... etc...

Just trying to better myself as a competent SL, and ANY advice is appreciated.

Work with the team, organize more complicated assaults with other squads than just your own. Try getting in TS, or mumble with another friend squadleader that you like. And stick with him ingame. Having more men, delegated between 2 guys in such manner will make the game experience more immersive, and might also increase your ability to meet greet and defeat the enemy.

Here is a tip for you Silent: top squad means nothing, it's ticket ratio what counts. If you made the enemy lose more tickets than you did, you were succesful. So keep that K/D positive and you'll be fine.

Good one. I could elaborate, but those who waste 5 other people's time by not being properly prepared shouldn't be doing it. The first time I led an infantry squad on Kyongan Ni, we managed to take the flag single handedly and then push them up the river whilst other squads fucked around in the hills. I did that by seeing what other squad leaders did wrong and what was right, and by developing my own flavour of leadership instead of stealing traits from others.

Just get confident as a squad member on a good server, then when that server's filled with nub pubbers, step up and lead them. Just make sure you're on SL mumble when you do so.

Hey, ignore the comments. Everyone needs training (hence why Lieutenants in the Army have a OCS/ROTC/SAs).

I wasn't perfect the first time around. And God knows, I am full of flaws.

When I do manage to succeed, it has something to do with the enemy team being somewhat incompetent. But here are a few tips...

1. Use the kick button on bad SMs. That's what I do, and I suggest you do the same.
2. Communicate with the team. Use mortar and APC support, and coordinate attacks with other squads.
3. Have a plan. Of course you must be able to make up plans on the fly - that's what makes good SLs. But have a goal and a path - get the kits you need, make sure everyone is loaded, and REGROUP...
4. Regroup often. Don't let people strafe too much apart if that's not part of the plan.

Here are just a few tips from a noob. And hey, getting top squad is strangely related to how well you do on the battlefield. Sure FOBs give many points, but I have led man squads who got MANY points and didn't shovel a single thing. It's all about teamwork and getting your objective - defend, attack, take out enemy FOBs...

And 5. Keep a good situational awareness! I don't mean just looking everywhere and knowing what everyone in your squad is doing, but CHECK YOU MAP OFTEN! Find the gap! Fill the missing hole!

Play off the other squads. If your team is attacking, defend. If they are heavy on one flank, move to the other etc. KEEP YOUR SQUAD CLOSE (Less than 50m) AT ALL(99%) TIMES!

learn by doing...as long as he aint bunnyhopping his way accross the map and ignoring his SMs then you shouldn't have much to berate him with.

My advice to you is to always position your squad either so that its supported by a second squad, or so that you are supporting a second squad.

Your squad is your responsibility at the end of the day, but its not an island - two squads working together is a force multiplier depending on their equipment.

Sounds like you're doing alright already, but I expect there is one skill you have not learned, as its the skill that at least half the community do not yet understand - retreating.

If something isn't going well, just abandon it and try again later/in a differnet way.

do NOT compound failure with more failure. Charging repeatedly in to MG fire is reserved only for when there is no choice.

Oh and everyone says be confidant, that's hard for some, remember though;
- You are always right, even when your wrong
- always have a basic route for your map for example; go to first flag and defends untill next if capped then go to the 3rd flag and cap and defend. This allow you to change your tactics but always have set flags that you will defend and attack during the round that will always make you seem assertive because you know where your going.
- Don't worry if you die, you have 4 other guys to attack the enemy untill they all die, make sure the medic doesn't revivie anyone untill either the enemy is beaten or the enemy has gone.
- don't worry if you don't have an exact plan, a basic we'll attack here and here and here will work well and make sure the SQ know that you're going to go through the attack ina certain way eg. we'll attack that large building and once the main force is down *rifleman 1,2,3* attack that building and clear it while the other guys finnish off the rest and go through building like that.

Pay attention: TAKE SUGGESTIONS... But remember, YOU are in charge...

I have 1 very important tip for you, keep high situational awareness, and I mean HIGH! keep checking your map every few seconds, know the map very well, know where are your team mates, what vehicles do you currently have running, who has what kit etc....

Are you telling me that you knew how to squadlead the first time you started to play this game? No, you did not. You have to learn the game first.
Everybody needs practice to become greater at something. That includes help from other players that are more experienced than yourself.
I had no idea how to squadlead, but after a while, I must say I'm a decent SL. At least with pubbers.

dont worry about dtacs he has a mild superiority syndrome
being a bit democratic, meaning listening to your SMs ideas often has good results

Never underestimate the power of positive thinking. You will find yourself in a meat grinder from time to time. If you get negative, your squad will get negative, and the situation will fall apart. Stay positive, focused and confident, and work through it, and you will be surprised at how well your squad will help you turn the situation around.

Always give the impression that you know exactly what you are doing, even if you have no idea what you are doing. As long as your squad has faith in you, they will execute your orders without question, and you all stand a fighting chance. If your squad is questioning your orders instead of following them, everyone will end up getting killed. Keeping this in check is a combination of your confidence and attitude, and using the kick button, as someone else posted earlier.

true don't not listen to them, but don't take their advice all the time, you need to stay in control.
