combat stress and taking break?

Post by maarit »

i really dont know how is it in real-life in some battlefield but ingame i really have few times suffered from tension that im not that effective anymore.
i mean if your squad manage to stay alive and keep of fighting and then finally win that situtiation, your squad must have some stress.
but usually its just that you destroy the cache, kill the last enemy and in 10 seconds your are running with your squad to the new battle.

so is there any squadleader that who orders the squad to take few minutes break after some tough battle?
(few minutes break would be good change to smoke cicarette,go piss and get new beer :p )

Well one of my favourite descriptions of PR, forgotten who said it, is that "PR is defined by medium-long periods of inaction, punctuated by sudden high intensity fighting".

So it fits that you do get little breaks in PR, unlike most other FPS games, but these are mainly a lead on to the next fight or lying wounded waiting for a medic. Combat stress is too strong a word for it, but I've certainly felt adrenaline playing PR and you do need those quiet moments to get yourself together.

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end... "

not really - cause it is a game... after round-end u can chill while the next map is loading, that should be enough :)

If I get stressed out because of the game, it's not because of the in-game action, rather out of frustration with other players.

i know what you mean. there really are times where its just worth catching a ride back to base, chilling for 5 minutes or so(in the real world, going to the bathroom, grabbing something to eat), reloading, and then heading back out. best used on insurgency.

^This, what Wh33lman just said.

There are some very intense moments in PR. After a success, I definitely try to get back to base or a FOB (quiter :) ) and rearm and relax for a little. But always ready for an attack or enemy rush :D If necessary.
Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

I tend to get stressed out by bad teams and players. I generally just lonewolf now because i inevitably get frustrated when playing with others, as a few of them are bound to be complete idiots or something.

Are you trolling or serious?

Which servers do you play on?

Did you figure who's to blame exactly?

I have encountered this kind of stress all the time when flying transport choppers.

There's a lot of intense AA-missile dodging and insertions into difficult areas, combined with people yelling at you to bring them closer to the action, guys calling for crates, etc etc.

Most good pilots just wait on the carrier or airstrip when they're not on a specific mission, and that's a good time to communicatw with your fellow pilots about AA locations, safe routes, and the like.
That's also when I go and get a snack or drink. ;-)

Somewhat like real combat I suppose, in that there's a lot of boring waiting around and then high-intensity action in short bursts.

Eh taking a piss break now and then is alright but I wouldn't say breaks are needed because of "combat stress" or just stress from the situation in game.

I think of combat stress of stress resulting from carrying actual equipment up and down mountains. Winded from real bounding in firefights. And stress related to real bullets cracking around you and friends being killed and wounded.

I do believe in breaks to "plan", regroup, and just take in the surroundings. As I feel too many (even in the PR) community) are bent on time and getting to the objective or target.

Funny that you'd make a thread about this. If Carbonade read this, he would probably write exactly the same as me:

Carbo and I were flying the Havok on Wanda Shan. We were the only Havok in the air, while they had both of their Z10s up. We met them both, had an epic fight, killed them both, and on our way back to main, my hands were shaking really bad. I told Carbo about it, and he felt exactly the same. Both each got an adrenalin rush like no other.
Rearming on the helipad, we found out that we had to take a couple of minutes break, to cool ourself down.

I'm sure we didn't experience the same stuff that real helicopter pilots or real soldiers do, but yes, you may get really stressed, and feel like taking a break when playing PR.

i got slightly stressed out the other day on a server as insurgent there was a british tank sitting around the corner of the building i was at and i had no anti tank ammo left and another insurgent was standing about 5 meters away from me and i was saying in mumble to him to walk 5 meters to where im standing and he has perfect shot on a tank not moving, he refused saying no dude i stay here, it ended up me shouting though mumble about 10 times using alot of expletives for him to move his *** to where im standing and him refusing and a group of other insurgents just standing there listening to us and laughing, in the end the tank destoyed the cache and we lost the game

Also, I have to add that I can really get freaked out when I know someone is behind me trying to kill me.
Example getting chased by a Stryker, BTR, Tank, etc. around buildings. That shit gives me one hell of an adrenalin kick.

yeah,i can think that there lot of stories about situations where you get stress.
but is there anyone who uses this when squadleading?
...to order your squad take a little break before continue to next objective.
do you benefit anything about that kind of little break or is it just waste of time?

i would love if squadleader after some tough situation orders to squad take a break...just a few minutes to get yourself up...

"squad!!...go in that building and take little break.one man guards frontdoor and everybody else, check your gears and chill.we stay here few minutes and then we continue to next objective...meanwhile i do my masterplan"

if theres no really benefit but it would be fun

Combat Stress is PTSD, shell shock. Nobody suffers from that playing PR.

Adrenaline though, that's what you mean. Funny but I get it too, it's the most pathetic adrenaline cause in my life [laughs], but guiltily yes I get it.

If i'm honest, it's 99% the deviation that causes it for me. Because I know it's not as easy as vBF2 where you can get really used to just point and click. I notice even experienced players rush their shots (Silly Savage's vids). Possibly deviation has more to it in terms of positive aspects than meets the eye.

the would be a HUGE benefit to this in the upcoming Arma 2 pr because the amount of moving around the map and the stamina it uses up. there have been times when i have gone prone to fire but accuracy was non-existent at medium ranges

I don't order them to take a break but I tend to head back to main after a fight, rearm, take some time and go from their. Works good on Insurgency as Bluefor. I rarely get the chance to do so in an AAS game since it's more about holding ground and you can't hold it if you're not their..

But a little stress is not uncommon. I must say though that faster FPS games like COD give me more adrenaline rushes than PR, especially when I'm the last one left in Search and Destroy against a superior force.

Stress happens a lot. Especially in CAS choppers. When i command i try to convince the CAS chopper crews to change with another fresh set of pilots every 10 mins or so. Keeps the chopper alive saves tickets and lives.

Pffft... taking a break at base to get a snack.

We have the phrase "Cover me, I'm eating pasta" for a reason.
The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.
