knives and bayonets

Post by Riflewizard »

Hey,

In my opinion the knives and bayonets in this game work horribly.

The way they are currently set up, they are only used to stab unaware enemies in the back, and blow up FOBs.
But if you run out of ammo in the middle of a heated close battle, the knife is almost useless.
It takes about 5 seconds to get the first jab in with the knife from draw to hit, which is way too long for it to model any sort of close combat hand to hand combat. The current system is more tuned towards looking cool when you pull the knife out than being an actual weapon.

Just some quick thoughts of mine.

I have to disagree, I can recall 5 separate occasions where the bayonet has saved my bum in the last year ingame.

e.g. in Kashan bunkers we were fighting over the top stairwell, the dude ran down spraying, we'd been down there for ages without reinforcement and suddenly my rifle gave that click that no one wants to hear...

so I had a choice of either running away and trying to find a dead man's kit, or of making a quick charge with a bayonet - I chose the latter :P ran round the corner by the stairwell and got him in one hit. <- but confined spaces like this with places to hide are where the blades are more useful, hence my choice of using it in that situation.

imo the deploy time of the bayonet is just to balance its better reach against the knife, as some teams currently havent got bayonets simply because of the huge number of new animations and other work that it requires.

and I'm pretty sure that the knife actually takes far less than 5 seconds...the bayonet might though
and blow up FOBs.
I'm not really fussed if that takes some time, if your close enough to the fob then its spawnpoint is disabled, so I'm happy to take my time over it

the only thing that annoys me is that the swipe doesnt do damage when it should sadly its prolly impossible to code in -_-
There is only one unforgivable lie That is the lie that says, This is the end, you are the conqueror, you have achieved it and now all that remains is to build walls higher and shelter behind them. Now, the lie says, the world is safe.? The Great Khan.

As it should be. Now if conventional forces were still all using bolt action rifles there might be some merit to charging at someone with a knife drawn and try to close the distance before he can cycle the action, but with largely all weapons today being automatic/semi-auto the knife is old tech. Also most of the guys you are trying to stab are probably wearing body armour.

It takes about 5 seconds to get the first jab in with the knife from draw to hit, which is way too long for it to model any sort of close combat hand to hand combat. The current system is more tuned towards looking cool when you pull the knife out than being an actual weapon.
Imo the animation represents more of a 'plunging' stab, not just a really quick jab as you are going to want to try and do some damage to the guy. To be honest there is no way to do hand to hand combat well in bf2.

FH2 has a pretty cool system (as far as I can tell) that fires a small cluster of projectiles.

If we could only spray from the hip with a mounted bayonet.. after teh 128 player test thingy, there's some hope for it, even for useless fast-ropes luls

edit: actually, more specifically. how do the knife projectiles work? Is it like a shotgun burst or what, or is it a really wide spray?

Mechanics wise I don't think melee will change. However, its utility may be subject to change in the future..

If put ability to non-scoped shooting with bayonet - thats would be awesome.

I wouldn't say the knife/ bayonet is completely useless because I've saved my *** with it against 2 russians in a complex when I ran out of ammo and they started to do a full- auto spray.

Ability to throw the knife on an unsuspecting enemy would be ninja.

I've never really needed a knife in deployment. On the other hand it's very useful when you're being bumrushed by two squads of Chinese bots!

It's useful for being super ninja when you need to be. If you're behind a squad and see a straggler, but don't want to call much attention to your presence, you can just knife a guy.

Yeah! Where can I request the ninja kit again?
Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

the knife/bayonet isnt nearly as useful as its made out to be. in the time it takes to take out your bayonet and attach it, the guy 15 meters away from you has reloaded and is shooting again. i pointed out that theyre used unrealisticly. you dont run out of ammo and then attach a bayonet, you attach a bayonet when your expecting a close quarters fight so you have a quick option between a rifle and knife. the SKS was the most realistic because the bayonet was always deployed and it took almost no time to switch between the 2.

I've found that i generally die if i try to use the knife in such close combat. Or in general. The problem is it takes a few seconds to ready- as much time as your rifle
The bayonets are cool, but i think they should be removed since they cannot be realistically portrayed.
