I hate to read chat, so I am constantly missing something important.
I want suggest personal messaging UI.
When you receive message, you have something like "You have 1 message" in corner of the screen. You click it and read the message.
To send a message you should type in chat something like "#message nickname blalalblabalbala" or "#say sq3 blablablabala"

Re: Personal text messaging
This is actually possible on the BF2 engine from what I remember. They had it in 2142, with the whispered text coming up purple. Something like this could be possible on the AD framework.
(and who knows, probably in PRA2 as well)

Re: Personal text messaging
ARMA2 ->
I would actually rather like to see a radio system where you can chat to a specific squad (if you are close enough), if people want to text chat with each other they should use Xfire, which would probably run smoother.
It's better to encourage people to use VOIP then seeing loads of messages which you have to read.
