This is a very good tip indeed. I see it used more and more which is a good thing. You can actually this in a lot of games. Use the top of the hill as a wall like web said. To explain the no prone situation when you think you took fire: In PR the shooter is settled in on your meaning his shot will not deviate a lot. So if he managed to hit you once, chances are he'll hit you again and take you out if you go prone. Thats why I always prefer to run away from the spot I got hit at and take cover somewhere else. Guessing the direction the shot came from if I'm not sure.
But lot of things will just come to you after playing some more. A lot of stuff just takes time. Learning the maps for example. This helps to guess what happens next
