Free Autodesk Software for Students

Post by BloodBane611 »

For those that don't know, Autodesk offers free limited license software to anyone who has a student email address.

Those that are interested should head here: Autodesk Education Community

Signup and you can download Max 2010, 2011, Maya, Mudbox 2010 and 2011, as well as plenty of other titles. There are both 32 and 64 bit versions available

Is this for Highschool students as well? I've been looking into this but it never specifically says. Thanks.

yes its for every student that has an Email address from school.

The only thing that you get when you download autocad that when you plot it has student version printed on it. I don't know if there is something similar for the other programms.

Would I be able to modify my model for the benelli or would it not work in the older program like some Microsoft Office Stuff?

you can't load a model that has been made with a newer version of max, into a old version of max. But you can export your model as a .obj or .3ds etc and then import it into the older version, just smoothing groups will most likley be removed and there might be a few other problems too.

So it wouldn't be worth the effort of me trying to fix what needs to be fixed cause someone we need to fix it anyway afterwards...oh well

I heard something about this in my Game design class at my school...
Apparently, Maya can only run a few files, right? Like, that's what the student edition is... that's what I'm guessing. XD

student licenses exclude usage as you are intending i believe.

I think it is lenient on the purpose of creating assets for mods, as long as its not commercial. At least what is the harm in creating a model for a free mod?

it's still something i would be incredibly wary about.

The BF2 3DsMax tools are only fully supported upto 3DsMax9 (not 2009, v9) but if all you want to do is reskin an object, your better off using the BF2 Editor than 3DsMax tbh for viewing your texture changes. Just install the Editor, set it up to reload any texture changes (so you don't need to restart each time you change the texture) and away you go :D

Ok, cool thanks,

but I'm pretty new to the object editor part of Bf2 Editor, do you have a tutorial somewhere (maybee I skip one without noticing) that talk about what you say ?

No real tut on it iirc, but its pretty easy. When in the object editor, go to Tools>Options, expand the reload settings tab and check all the boxes, hit ok and it should then reload a texture once it detects the texture has been modified (sometimes might take a couple of saves to pick up a change but most of the time its very good on picking up a change).

If you knew enough about max scripts etc you possibly could but no one as yet has done it, other than a tiny thing I got Mosquill to do for me so the LMing part of the scripts supported the later versions better, although it wasn't much since they worked pretty well before hand but fixed a few of the small little bugs, but ye only reason why we went to that effort is because the later versions of max are much better at rendering, with multi-CPU rendering support etc and also 64bit so makes sense, where from a modelling POV there isn't that much different between 9 and the later versions IMO, but I know some would kill for a few of the new ones features :p
