View Distance and Resolution

Post by reozm »

Does anyone else have a bad graphics card, not so much that you can't play Project Reality, but enough so you have to balance view distance and resolution?

I have to choose between 800x600 resolution and 100% view distance and 1024x768 resolution and 75% view distance.

I've been playing 1024x768 resolution and 75% view distance because I rarely snipe or marksman and 100% view distance is most important for that. I do this because I noticed by efficiency with iron sights increases on higher resolutions, probably because at distances people show up as a single pixel on 800x600.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Which graphic card do you have?

However, I suggest you to set 100% view distance (have you tried 1024x768 and 90% view distance?). I've figured that 100% view distance is extremely important.
Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

100% view distance is of course important, but what good is looking very far if you can't tell the difference between friend and foe due to a resolution of 800x600?

I can't really suggest you to do anything else then upgrading your PC! You will need a high resolution and view scale if you want to get more out of PR. I mean I can see the difference between friend or foe, even though he is nearly out of the viewing distance on Muttrah.

If you have like 100-150$ (Not sure what your Yankee prices are) lying around, you should buy a new graphics card! :D

No, the extra view distance is much more important. I used to play on low res. Once you play enough PR, you'll get a feel for what's going on on the map and you'll intuitively know your team's dispositions without having to check the map every contact. If it's not friendly, it's definitely enemy.

Before they took arrows off players, I could look at the map and tell what every person on our team was doing, as well as what close to every person on the other team was doing, with a fairly small error rate (close to 0% for allies, probably 5-10% for enemies).

You learn the skills you need. Having said that, I used to play a lot of PR.

Edit: View distance max, everything else min. Low geometries will cause glitches, particularly at long range, but as long as you don't gun in armoured vehicles and helos a lot, it is harmless (arguably beneficial). Always view distance max, even if you're not sniping - because other people will be, and you're putting yourself at a massive disadvantage against everything that wants to target you from that range by reducing your situational awareness and therefore protection. Besides, almost every kit has optics roughly on par or better than a sniper's used purely for looking at things.

You actually can (arguably, easier than if you had good resolution and good graphics - US Army vs Russia in Silent Eagle?), I believe.

Without 100% VD, you could potentially not see the massive armored vehicle sitting in the desert, while they see you and kill you easily. It's better to know the situation around you, even if you can't do anything about it.

Thanks for all the input guys.
I used to play on 1024x768 with view distance 100% but that lagged for every map except Muttrah City.
I think I'll use 800x600 with 100% view distance and just avoid iron sights for a while.

How much ram you have? Because that is mostly one of the cheapest upgrades that might help you out :)
