As far as the general insurgent factions, the Dragunov is a limited and thus powerful kit, obviously not as good as some but the PSO scope zoom is a joke.

I think this is where the confusion comes from. People are likely shooting at much shorter distances than what they think they are since they are used to higher zoom optics on marksman rifles. With the new version I also perceived what I thought was a substantial increase in accuracy since the deviation seemed to be less, but in actuality it was due to a lower magnification on the optics.

the M4 for hamas, dunno. SVD I think is fine. Just people are good with some of the DMR weapons and some squads don't keep their spacing and move in one blob. Therefore death is administered by a guy with a gun.

I agree with OP and with Savage.

The SVD and the M4a1 optics are just total WMD's.

I first fell in love with the SVD on Fallujah West and never went back.

but M4a1 Optics on Gaza beach...man we were laughing about it...oh look the HAMAS have a rifle as their DMR lolol ok look a IDF troop. BOOM. :O ... never laughed about it again.

I think the DMR's are fine tho. I use the ones I can (SVD, M4A1 optics) and dont touch the ones I cannot (m21 I HATE YOUUU)

@op: last time i checked the Good ol SVD was not 1 hit KO, you must have been landing some pretty good shots. that or they were walking straight towards/away from you. that makes taking them out pretty easy. now if i do recall with marksman body shots take 2 due to body armor but leg shots tend to kill were you perhaps hitting them in the thighs?

also not leading them and placing the corssheir ahead of them and waiting for them to walk into it is a legit technique. we use it in the army for situations where it would be hard to actually track a moving target smoothly.

i love all marksman kits. i dont use them often unless i'm playing insurgency as an insurgent though. but when the situation arises where i need them they are a god sent miracle.

Hi Bringer, thanks for the input.

The Dragunov is certainly a 1-shot kill.. I got a fairly good kill count when I played with it the other day on Basrah (much to the irritance of the Brit side).

Edit: Sorry, yeah, the rounds may have been hitting them in the thighs. I'm a bit unsure about that though.

The SVD is fine as it is. Yes it hits hard. It should, it is a marksman rifle. It has low powered optics and ten rounds per magazine, hardly overpowering. The Hamas M4 however, is a DMR with a 30 round magazine and full auto capability as well as deployed mode for increased accuracy. That's insanely overpowered, nobody else has anything like that! Oh wait, except, IDF, MEC, UK, etc...

What you must take into consideration is balance of the faction as a whole. Is one particular weapon system powerful? Yes. How does that fit with the capabilities of the faction as a whole though? Remember, Hamas has exactly two optics kits available for the entire faction: Sniper and Designated Marksman. The forces they fight, namely IDF, have optics on most every single kit, as well as many other technological edges.

Excellently stated Stoickk. The SVD is precisely as deadly as it should be, given the big picture. That big picture is exactly what PR is about. Balancing weapons on the basis of availability (rather than editing damage tables) is a hallmark of a truly great game, at least in my book.

Now if only we could get PSOs on RPKs. Oh lord I'd never see the sun again. On that note, I could perhaps see the introduction of 'Tabuk' sniper systems implemented for the ever-nerfed basic insurgent faction. For those unfamiliar with that term, they are basically Ak-47 receivers fitted with an extended barrel, PSO-1, and typically a 10-round magazine.

..... a romanian PSL ? sounds good.

oh and about the "marksman" rifles i could say something ...
since the formula used for a 7.62x54R bullet :

Energy = .5 * weight * velocity^2 / 7000 / 32.175

we can said

Energy = .5 * 174 * 2610^2 / 7000 / 32.175

so E ( energy ) = 2631.38

so the energy expressed in ft-lbs, is 3567.67 in Joule

this mean the 1-shot kill is correctly used

no need to thank me.

let the lonewolf 1337 5n1p312 take the sniper kit. so the real snipers can take the marksman and help their squad in medium - long range.

ps - its not overpowered if everybody gets them.

The M14 and Chinese DMR's have always felt terribly inaccurate to me. The SVD and M4 and quite nice though, I don't really see the overpowered bit though they're doing what they're meant to.

From my point of view, anything that can one-shot-kill people so easily with little to no recoil in a game where your average assault rifle takes as much as 3 hits to kill and with lots of recoil, is overpowered.

LMGs' used to be overpowered, they're fine now. So why can't DMR's?

I don't see most of the marksman rifles as being overpowered. But the one-hit kills from the Dragonuv are pretty ridiculous. I can't even manage one hit kills with most sniper rifles, unless my target gets stupid enough to leave their head exposed.

Marksman rifles are supposed to have some decent stopping power though.

I've been getting more and more 1-shot kills with the SVD, even on distances of over 300/400 meters. The accuracy at those distances is a bit tricky, but a shot that lands is lethal.

Also noticed that I can hit moving targets (sideways) without leading them. Just fire when the target is in the middle of your scope and he drops. This happens a lot in Fallujah, when I'm doing recon (as MM) in one of the buildings near Palace. BLUFOR running on the roads into town, or running by on crossings 300 meters away drop if I want them to.

Using the SVD up close however (10-30 meters) is even more fun. *evil*

Its a F***in DMR man, it fires high power rifle rounds that are meant to take down anything they hit. Not OP to me.

I think when looking at the SVD you must also look at all the other DMRs.

There are three categories

No1
M4A1 DMR - IDF&Hamas
Tavor DMR - IDF
L86A2 DMR - British

These three are a mix of LMG with a low magazine capacity and Sniper rifles with a weak bullet.

No2
MSG-1 (basically G3 DMR) - Germans, MEC, Taliban

The same as No1, with less magazine capacity but a more powerful bullet.

No3
M14 - USA&USMC
Type89? - China
SVD - Russia, Militia, Insurgents, Hamas

Same as No2, without automatic fire, and with smaller magazines(not M14 iirc) and a stronger Bullet(again not M14 iirc)

To me that all seems a pretty good balance. Each are a tradeoff and consequently not brilliant in every environment. If you feel that the SVD stands out, I think it might be because you tried using every rifle in the same way.

No 1&2 categories can be used BOTH as a LMG and a marksman rifle. No 3 is a superior marksman rifle at longer ranges though.

I don't think you can single out the SVD as beeing overpowered. If anything it would be ALL DMRs.

My 2 cents anyway.

BenHamish wrote:I realise the SVD uses the large 7.62x54R rounds (as does the PKM), but this all really did seem excessive. I actually felt sorry for the squad members - I went from three kills with the crappy 'sapper gun' (Militia medic) to twelve kills! None of them stood a chance, even with the body armour (They were British Army).
(Edit: Does this mean the PKM has the same kill-power?)
It seems that you are thinking like guys from Dice,
Weapons like Dragunov kill with one shot.
It is not overpowered,it is realistic, only thing that is bad on Dragunov is his range,
creators says that is god up to 700 meters, but in reality you should be lucky if shoot someone
on 300 meters range.
Dragunov THE BEST !!!!!! :D
