Both BF2 and PR won't launch on ATI Radeon HD 4350

Post by BrownBadger »

Starts up, black screen, monitor goes blank (no screen), 2 seconds later the game closes itself before reaching the BSS splash without giving an error.

The only thing that has changed on my PC from working fine to not working at all is my graphics card. BF2 and PR worked fine on my system until I installed my temporary graphics card; ATI Radeon HD 4350.

I have updated my drivers, but everytime I start my PC it says Install/Update your drivers.

I've tried changing resolution and settings in the config files, and one time I got to the login screen and then CTD upon finishing login each time. Appreciate any help or ideas. My monitor refresh rate is 60Hz and the game is set to launch at 60Hz.

hey brown! i had the same problem after changing graphics card. its probably a shader issue, i managed to fix it by completely deleting the configs in /my documents/battlefield2/profiles.
That should help.

Probably a setting in your profile that's conflicting with your new graphics card. Try to rename/delete video.con in your profile (my documents > battlefield 2 > profiles > 00x > video.con) and check again.

That worked. Thanks for the quick and helpful responses! Now to install PR and see if that'll follow suit.

So this issue is now happening again but on a different ATI card. A ATI HD 7970, I've tried the above fix, but I've also tried GPU scaling options, I've updated my framework and my drivers. I've done absolutely everything I know how to do. I'm completely stumped... Any ideas on what might work to get this going again? I want to play PR again, but can't in the current state. I would play the Arma version if it was populated.

I'd suggest completely deleting your GPU drivers, the AMD CCC, all of it.
Use these steps:
'[R-COM wrote:LITOralis.nMd']download this.
Driver Fusion - The Complete Driver Solution

install it, run it, completely uninstall the Radeon drivers.

REBOOT.

Do NOT allow the new hard ware wizard to install drivers.

Download the new drivers directly from either AMD.com or the GPU manufacturer's website.

Install the drivers, make sure to do a custom install so no junkware is added in the installation.

REBOOT.

You should then be good to go, though on some games you might need to delete the shaders caches once, especially with BF2 and PR.
You might want to run PR with custom video resolution settings once jsut to make sure it boots,

Edit your PR shortcut and ( what AfterDune said ) put this in it
Something like:

Code: Select all

"D:\Program Files\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" +restart +menu 1 +fullscreen 0 +szx 1280 +szy 720
Dont just copy paste this, but adjust to your install location. Make sure you dont omit quotation marks or it wont work.
Once in PR, go to Video Settings and adjust correctly,
If you start in windowed mode and it CTDs, a Message will pop up telling you the problem. Take a screenshot or write this down and post it to this thread.
