Crash when saving is 90% of the time (and 99.9999% in this case) down to running out of memory when saving.

The simplest way to solve this problem is to free up as much memory as you can on your PC before running the editor. Do things like start from a totally fresh restart, close down all unnecessary programs and tasks and if you really need to go to the classic windows themes as they use hardly any RAM compared to normal window themes etc.
You can also do things to optimize your BF2 editor, like turning off all the unnecessary addins in the addin manager, such as the animation editor etc and also when in the level editor, don't render sky, water and things like that, possibly only grid mode on the terrain etc and maybe turn off drawing all the statics and roads but this can get a bit tiresome, although tbh it all is :p

The other option is to get more RAM, or better yet, get a 64bit system and over 4gbs of ram, so then the editor has a full 4gbs to play with :)

No other way round it I'm really sorry to say.

I did a fresh restart the first time around, closed all programs.

What I did not try is classic theme and not rendering the sky and such.

How can I disable the animation editor and what not?

I got Win 7 64bit and 4 GBs of 1333MHz ram.

This also happened literally I loaded up the map, so its just a flat surface with a colormap, saved it, and it crashed. no roads or statics.

edit: just disabled some things and it still crashed with a monitor saying I had 1100MB of memory left. =\

Another trick that I use is that when I save is that I save one item at a time. So if you just painted the map and clicked on "save", you'd notice that the editor has several boxes selected. I unselect all but one and save one at a time. This has really helped prevent crashes for me, especially by saving the "compiled" items all by themselves.

If its 100% a blank terrain you may need to make a small terrain adjustment by hand before you can do anything.

Win7 dose eat up a lot more RAM than XP and I'm not very familiar with Win7 so I can't help you much there (I'm using WinXP x64) but to stop addins you dont need loading, go to Tools>Add-In Manger and then you can expand boxes like the animation editor and uncheck "autoload". If you need to use that addin later on, just check on the loaded box to load it when you need it, what I do with the animation editor when ever I need to check animations (not very often :p )

The only ones I have constantly loaded is the ConsoleUI, Level Editor, Objects Editor (although you might not need that one but still really useful for checking statics and other objects) and of course the Terrain Editor. Other than that you can turn off the rest, epically the SP editor.

Ye, that's a good tip :)

Edit: I have successfully saved several times without complications.

I restart the computer, disabled all but the Console UI, Level, and Terrain editor, I am not loading up any of the statics, I exited all programs not needed including explorer.exe, and I saved with 2 of the editor save boxes, Not rending the sky or fog and meant to not render the water but I forgot and it saved anyway.

I don't want to open a new thread every time I run into a problem so I think I am going to open a new thread in the map section and post any problems in there in the future.

thank you for the help.
