China is widely regarded as the next major military opponent of the US, including by senior PLA officers, mainly because of Taiwan, but also because China is trying to gain regional and even global hegemony. And China participated in a off-and-on border war with the USSR since the 1960s, attempted to invade Taiwan in the late 1950s, invaded Vietnam in the late 70s/early 80s and also financed, advised and trained certain mujaheddin units in the Soviet-Afghani conflict.Ugly Duck wrote:I still wish they had chosen something besides China. Russian backing of North Korea has for the most part not (maybe never) been as strong as Chinese backing.
